AM Workouts

Hi Cathe!

This is my first post. I discovered your workouts earlier this year and I've built up quite a DVD collection. Your workouts are so much more like "real" workouts as opposed to the ones that some of the other instructors put out. Keep up the great work!

Here's my question. I've read that a lot of people that work out in the AM feel great and have incredible energy all day long. Whenever I've tried to work out in the AM, I feel just the opposite. I'm happy that it's done, but I feel like I want to just nod off and go to sleep for the rest of the day. Am I doing something wrong? Am I maybe working too hard? Could diet be part of the problem?

Thanks for any advice you can give!

Angela

Hi Angela,
I am a morning exerciser and this should leave you feeling awake, accomplished, maybe a litle relaxed from a good workout, but not ready to sleep?

It might be your diet if you dont eat something for a snack at night. I never eat in a.m. before exercise (unless I do weights only).

Have you tried getting into the routine for a week or two?? Also, make sure you eat right after youre done.

I follow two rules of thumb when it comes to my morning workouts...(especially intense Cathe workouts)...I always eat an hour to an hour and a half before a workout..usually a green apple and piece of string cheese or bagel with peanut butter. I once tried Kick Max on an empty stomach and thought I was going to die, had to stop very early on.

The second rule is to, like the poster above, eat right afterward, some sort of protein, protein shake, but you need to re-fuel, it is just as important for your health as the actual workout itself.

Hi Angela,

Sorry not Cathe...but I used to feel this way after working out in the morning. I get up pretty early and get people moving in the house either to work, or school. I usually have a cup of coffee and a bowl of oats mixed with some sort of fruit and 1% milk. My workouts are done about 2 hours after I first wake up so by then I am pretty much awake. After the workout if I feel exhausted I make sure to eat some protein like Jerry recommended. WH.Wheat toast w/peanut butter or nut butter. Or with 2 poached/boiled eggs (no yoke). With a hot shower and now dressed I make sure I get out the door. If I stay in I might be tempted to go back to bed. This defeats the purpose of the workout.

Cutting back on the routine or weights might help as well. Over straining can leave you totally drained. Opt for the pre-mix workouts (or try out the July 07 TimeSaver) because they tend to be shorter in length but really get in there good.

I hope this helps...Keep at it because this fatigue will surely be replaced with loads of energy. Good Luck!;-)

Hi Angela,

I flip flop back and forth from time of workouts. I used to do afternoon workouts, then my scheduled changed and I tried evening workouts, I like them but there is to many excuses in the evening so out of necessity I have become or am working on becoming a morning workout. I sleep to the last possible moment and often sleep in my workout clothes. I don't always eat in the morning just grab my seltzer and go.

Here is what I have learned about myself, if I blow it off in the morning it usually doesn't get done in the evening. I feel like I have to rush to cook dinner and can't truly relax and enjoy myself.

Try saving your harder and longer workouts for days when you have more time, like your off days from work.

A helpful hint I was giving when I was looking from switching to morning workouts was don't skip on sleep. Some mornings my body just doesn't want to move so that becomes my rest day.

You could try doing 3 or 4 morning workouts for a while and then add more as your body becomes accustomed to your new schedule. Also you may need to shorten your workouts

If you do a search on morning exercise you will find lots of info.

Hi,

Im no expert like Cathe, but I find I can't eat before a workout because I start frothing and burping and it's a mess - especially with cardio...it's even happened from drinking water! So, I don't eat before I work out in the mornings, but typically I find if I'm not energetic after a morning workout, it's because I've not gotten enough sleep the night before. Are you getting a full nights rest? Just something to consider. If that doesn't help you may consider getting a physical to rule out any minor issues that could be causing fatigue.

:)

So glad someone posted this. I have the same problem - I feel so tired during the day after a morning workout! I have tried to eat protein afterwards, try to get enough sleep the night before etc... For me exercise would be best late at night because I'd sleep like a baby, but I just can't do that, it needs to get done first thing. x(
