Am I weird?

Okay, don't answer that... LOL Is this weird...

I have a protein shake in the morning after I work out. It has strawberries, blueberries and a tbsp of ground flax seed. That's about 7:00 AM ish. I then have cereal with yogurt and a banana around 9:30/10:00AM. By 11 I'm starved - ready to eat my desk. But if I eat a rice and bean enchilada instead of cereal - same calories as the cereal yogurt and banana - I'm perfectly fine. I KNOW I need the grains, but why am I not getting full? The cereal I eat is good quality - Kashi Go Lean, Nature's Path Optimum Zen or Optimum...
Should I be trying something else?

I find beans to be one of the most filling veggies. They're really high in fiber. And personally, those store-bought cereals have never stuck with me. I never eat them because they're gone in about 20 minutes!

I would love to eat steel oats, and I have them, but they take a long time to cook. I don't have that kind of time in the morning, unfortunately. Any other ideas on how to get in my grains? I do love beans, but I think I need grains.

Agree with Shannon...you're getting more fiber in the beans so it fills you up longer...plus additional protein in the beans too takes longer for protein to break down so you stay fuller feeling longer.

I really try to load up on fiber and protein at breakfast time because if I do that...I am not hungry all day and just eat the remaining meals because I know I need to...not because I'm hungry.

And one thing I do with store-bought cereal is mix it with Fiber One or All Bran. Those two cerals add alot of fiber in a half cup full. I like to mix Raisin Bran with Fiber One...one cup raisin bran and 1/2 cup fiber one. You could also mix the Fiber One into your yogurt for an added fiber boost.

I cook 1 cup of steel cut oats, which equals about 3 or 4 servings when done, on the weekend. I measure them out into separate containers and stick them in the fridge. When I want one, I pull it out, dump it in a bowl (it's all stuck together, so I mash it a bit with a fork to break it up) and then microwave for a few minutes. They taste great, just like when cooked fresh. I wouldn't cook anymore than enough to last a week though.

Well then I am weird too because I know just what you are talking about. Same problem here too. What to do???? What to do???? LOL!

Find one or two days of the week when you do have time (Sunday and another day) and make multiple batches. If you make 4 servings at a time, you can put 3 of them in bowls and refrigerate them. Then, for the next 3 days, chop up the oatmeal (it will have formed into a solid mass by then!), add some milk of choice (soy, rice, whatever) and microwave for about a minute.

That way, you only have to find the time once or twice a week.

Also...change out the banana for a fruit with more fiber in it like an apple or a pear. Banana's have a high GI so they break down quickly because they lack the fiber content of other fruits.

The Nature's Path have 10 grams of fiber, so I'm not skimping there. But I do understand about the store bought. I'm going to try to steel oats.

Thanks Kathryn and Shannon for the suggestion on cooking the oats when you can and putting them in seperate containers. I'll do that tonight when I cook my brown rice for veggie wraps (dinner). I'll try those tomorrow.

I'll also nix the nana and replace it with a pear or apple.

I get the most hungry on leg workout days or heavy lifitng.

Today, I had a salad with beets, peppers, mozzarella cheese and chic peas with a side of green beans and 1 hour later was starving!! I have the same problem always. I'm a vegetarian and I think I may not get enough protein........but still!!!

I have given up meat for Lent, but I started 20 days ago and over all I have not had any issues - it's just the cereal vs. more substantial foods for breakfast. I do chart everything I eat, though and make sure I get at least 100 grams of protein.

But I have found that if I don't have 20 grams of protein (shake or whatever) within an hour of a heavy weight workout, I am starving the following day. And I have to eat enough. I tend to up my calories by 100/200 on days I do heavy weights, and keep them lower on strictly cardio days. It works - I'm wearing a skirt today that I could not get into 3 weeks ago...

I cook the steel cut oats ahead of time too. I pack a serving a day with my lunch and I just pop it in the microwave at work during my first morning break. I also put a handful of frozen mixed berries (blueberry, raspberry, blackberry) and a pinch of cinnamon on top so it heats in with the microwave reheat. Splash a little soy on there too and MMMmmm…taste sort of like a cobbler for breakfast to me :9. If I still feel hungry later, I just slice an apple and eat it until lunch.

Just my 2 cents….

I put my steel cut oats in water overnight in the fridge. In the morning i just microwave it and it only takes 2 - 3 minutes. The soaking causes it to take less time to cook.

I also do that with other whole grains. Like quinoa, I soak it over night and i find it cooks faster the next morning.

Take care,
Sham

Cereal usually doesn't make me feel full very long either. I usually only eat it on the weekends when I sleep late. I usually have oatmeal for breakfast at about 7:30 and it keeps me full until lunchtime sometime between 11:30 and 12:00. My favorite way to make oatmeal is to mix in a tupperwear container 1/2 c. oatmeal, 3/4 c. vanilla soymilk, 1 egg, 1/2 c. frozen blueberries and 2 tbsp. spenda. Then I bring the whole thing with me to work, nuke it in the microwave for about 2-3 minutes and eat it at my desk.

I solemnly swear that I am up to no good

I do the same batch thing with steel cut oats. I always feel fuller if I include protein with breakfast, usually peanut butter. Of course, a 3 Musketeers could work.

Otherwise she eats something fried and chocolate. Can you fry # Musketeers bars? Maybe if you freeze them before dipping them in batter and deep frying....Oh, then add a scoop of French vanilla ice cream and some hot fudge sauce. I may have to go home and try this.

Ladies - I went home last night, cooked up some steel oats and packed them into 4 containers. I brought one in to work with me, and reheated it with a half cup of milk (yeah - the moo cow stuff) and a touch of splenda, and ate it. First of all, it's good. Better than oatmeal. Second of all it's now noon and I JUST had a banana to have something small before my step class and I'm STUFFED! *Does Happy Dance Around the Room* Thanks for the idea! I feel healthy and ready to go!

Now, if I could just get my body used to that flax I used in my protein shake for only the second time, I'll be in business, but I'm willing to wait on that. They may not appreciate me in step class though... }( }( }(

Robin - I heard on the evil food network of a restaurant here in the Bay Area that fries EVERYTHING, including 3 musketeer bars...

My stomach is hurting just thinking about it.
