Am i doing the wrong exercises for my body shape?

According to a website on AOL, i am considered a "Spoon Shape" and it said that i shouldn't do any hi /low impact aerobics or step tapes because it will make me bigger. Basically, I am 5 feet 2 inches tall - about 128 pounds and my upper half is ok, but i have wide hip bones and carry the weight on my hips, thighs and butt. I enjoy your tapes so much. I have your Mega Step Blast tape, Circuit Max, Interval Max and Step works tape. I also have a Kickboxing tape by Kathy Smith. I rotate these tapes and do exercise around 4-5 times a week. I keep the step at 4 inches instead of 6. Do you think this will make me bigger? Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated. I don't know what to do.

Hi....I'm obviously not Cathe, but I've often had the same thoughts as you. In fact, we're almost exactly the same measurement-wise. I havent noticed myself getting any bigger necessarily from any particular exercise over another. However I do get bigger when I pig out!! I was wondering what your diet is like?? And, I personally do think that some people respond better to one type of exercise over another. But, no matter what the body type I think it's important to do a variety of cardio so your body doesnt get accustomed to one particular thing. Watching my diet combined with working out has given me far better results than solely working out.

Hi Stacy,

I agree with you- Exercise alone doesn't do it for me either! My diet is ok. I have oatmeal for breakfast and a salad/fruit for lunch and try to have a low fat mean at dinnertime. My downfall is that i love sweets and although i try to have fat free desserts after dinner, it still adds up. For instance - i never get the "so called 16 servings" out of a half gallon of Healthy Choice ice cream - its more like 6! I think that's what's making me bigger- not the exercise! So, i'm going to try having sugar free jello for desserts since it's so low on calories - only 10 per serving. I'll give it a couple of weeks and see what it does. Also, i have a tendancy to eat pizza and junk on weekends, which doesn't help. Does this sound similar to you at all?

No, no, no!!!! The correct number of servings in a half gallon of Healthy Choice ice cream is 2! Also, a serving of donut holes is 20, not 4 like it says on the box. Potato chips....depending on the size of the bag, usually 2 servings per bag. http://plaudersmilies.de/eek2.gif Cookies? Usually 10 or 12.

If I could eat only potato chips, buttered popcorn and pizza and not gain weight, I'd be in heaven!

On the Food Channel yesterday they had a story on a hot dog eating contest that happens yearly in NYC. A guy "trains" all year to win this....he weighs under 100 pounds, and eats enough for several people on a regular basis. By the way, the winner ate 50 hot dogs in 12 minutes. I would like to enter a cake eating contest....how much birthday cake in under 10 minutes. I love that icing!

Hi Donna, just adding my 2 cents. I guess I am a spoon shape, or pear, or whatever. All my problems are in my butt and thighs. I do lots of step and hi/lo and weight work and it has certainly NOT made my legs bigger. Its made them more defined and the dimpling (which is genetic and NOT our faults) less noticable. I dont know why they say that?? My pants fit MUCH better and have even gone down a size! Just MHO. Judy

Honeybunch-
that's funny- but so true!! 1/2 cup of icecream is a tease! That's why i'm going to try jello- i figure ya can't go wrong with only 10 calories per serving.
Thanks for the reply!

Hi JudyM64 - Thanks for the Reply. I'm definitel going to keep up the tapes them. I was hoping someone would tell me exactly what you said. I'd be devastated if i had to give up my step and hi low tapes.

Don't avoid what you love Donna

Or you'll find yourself not working out as much or not enjoying your workouts if only doing stuff others say you have to do...and THAT defeats the purpose;-).

Like everyone has said...moderation in food if you want to help speed up losing bumps and lumps that you don't like..hey, we all know when we could be eating "better";-). But as far as restricting yourself of certain exercises you love thinking they will harm your goals of slimming down..phooey IMHO.

Not that I don't believe some exercises do things to the body that others don't, I just don't think it's critical to build a routine around it to see "results". If anything, it probably has more bearing on a person who is peak fitness and wants to fine tune their body.

There is nothing we can do to change our shape and genetics..but exercise is exercise...calories burned, strength gained, endurance built. I'm built very similar to you and even tough I store all my extra in my booty..you won't see me stopping my stepping..or trying to decrease the size of the muscle tissue there. The bigger the muscle the more calories burned on any activity..including stepping;-). IMHO..step away and enjoy your workouts.
