Allergies and energy?

Do any of you who suffer from seasonal allergies feel rrreeaaalllyyy run down when you have an "attack"? I've been dealing with sinus problems since last Thursday and my workouts have suffered bigtime. I can barely complete 30 minutes of the easiest (by Cathe standards) step workouts. I feel really lethargic and my limbs just feel heavy.

Just curious whether this lethargy is because of the allergy problems and whether others struggle to workout during allergy season.

Thanks!

Joni

If my allergies are well controlled by medication, I can pretty much pretend I don't have any allergies at all. But when my asthma is triggered by my allergies (which is really year-round), or when I develop a sinus infection from a really bad attack, I feel crappier than crap. So I have to stop working out for a while until I feel better.

Hope you feel better soon.:)

Yep! As long as I take my Zyrtec daily I am fine. Let those allergens start flying and my head feels like a 2 ton brick.

Do you take anything for them?

Normally I use Rhinocort nasal (steroid) spray every day, but it hasn't been doing much good lately, so I added naso-chrom, sudafed, and now claritin to the mix. The sinus pressure/headache feels better but the fatigue is what's really getting to me.

Is Zyrtec prescription? I might make an appt. with my doctor if this doesn't let up soon! I was *just* getting my endurance back after a 3-week break from Cathe workouts while I was on vacation. Since the allergies kicked in, I'm pooped after the warm-up! And my avg. HR has been around 188 (!) even during the low impact step workout.

Thanks for the input!

Joni..I had to go to year round Allergy meds a few years ago. Yes, when I get an attack without taking my meds...it is awful!! Luckily I never get a Sinus infection but have been taking Zyrtec also and it works wonders...it is a precription...:)...Carole

Hi Joni,
I have seasonal allergies too. If I don't get them under control, I will usually get an infection too. It has taken me a while to find the right mix of meds for me, but right now I have them pretty much under control. I take Rhinocort and Claritin. If I slip on my meds I also have asthma attacks, and feel very, very, very tired! I know it is hard, but you are doing the right thing by listening to your body. I hope you are feeling better soon!

Joni,

My allergist told me that with seasonal or year round allergies, you are much better off to keep them under control with a daily treatment than letting them get out of control and trying to reel them back in. This is what I do so I'm never really "down and out" with allergy symptoms. Some days are worse than others but for the most part, I feel pretty good every day.

I've been treating mine with two doses a day of good old fashioned liquid Dimetapp and one shot of Nasonex a day for almost 20 years and found this is what I need to do to keep things under control. I have year round allergies because I'm highly allergic to dust as well as many other things. I used to have severe asthma and really belive this regimen has helped me keep that under control because I can't tell you the last time I had asthma symptoms.

I have tried some of the newer allergy medications like Zyrtec and all they do is dry me out. I think the older allergy medications are still the best. I have no sleepy side affects with Dimetapp.

Oh Joni I feel for you!! I too am just starting to feel the first onset of an allergy attack coming on. I usually dispense w/any cardio & just try to concentrate on my strength training. Unfortunately I usually have to take the pounds of either my dbs or bb down from what I normally do. Just don't have enough oxygen in my lungs to hoist up the heavy weights. Just take it easy & when your feeling better BRING IT!! Hope you feel better soon. Kathy:(

PS: I usually run to the doctor to get my antibiotic (Levaquin) + I take Nasonex spray. If I need to, I also take Allegra. Once I'm on all my meds I'm able to do my strength training. I don't, however, do any high impact aerobics b/c it makes the sinus infection worse. This has been my experience anyway. HTH.

Ha! I like this KathyH: when your feeling better BRING IT!!

That's what I'm planning!

Thanks everyone for the advice/input. Truth is I was worried that I was being a hypochondriac in terms of the fatigue as an excuse to weasel out of my workouts - but hearing from you guys has confirmed that this lethargy I've been fighting is the real deal. x(

Might try strength training instead of step tonight - but even lifting my limbs has been challenging, so I might have to dust off the 2 and 3 lb dumbells and the 18lb body bar I never use any more!

Thanks for the tips!

Joni
