All you PUB lovers... I have a question....

Some feedback on PUB. I wore my HRM and my average HR was only 93 and Max 124. It said I only burned 196 calories. Does this sound right? I matched Cathe's weights except for when she picked up those 15-pounders for biceps work... I thought "not in this life-time!!!" I forgot to strap on the HRM when I did PLB the other day so this is the first strength workout I've done with the HRM.

My heart rate is really up there on cardio workouts.
 
Yes, this sounds about right. You don't burn nearly as many calories with an upper body weight workout unless you are lifting very heavy weights. The after burn with a weight workout is slightly higher however as compared to cardio but the total calorie burn with cardio is usually higher. Strength workouts have other benefits so don't give them up (builds muscle, bone density, can be considered functional fitness and you burn more calories than if you were sitting on your duff).
 
Thanks for the responses... oh I'm not giving up weight workouts... I just have this new toy (HRM) and I was surprised at the low heart rates/calorie burn I had during the workout. Thanks for the info.

Oh and BTW, nobody told me those stupid knee rolls and pikes were on PUB!!!! My abs were just getting over being sore from my attempt at those earlier in the week. :9
 
If you wear your HRM during your next lower body strength workout, I think you will find a much higher average heart rate and calorie burn. The lower body muscles are much larger and it takes a bit more energy to contract them, versus the muscles of the upper body. Cathe's upper body workouts are killer, but not in the cardiovascular sense. ;) However, when I do a lower body workout, my heart rate really gets up there (esp. during squats, lunges, leg press, and plies). Cathe kicks my butt no matter what body part is being worked.. . I obviously need not mention the dreaded stability ball pikes. ;)

I suspected that would be the case. I sweat like a horse when I do lower body work, I was wringing wet after PLB.
