Again....Dyson vaccum anyone!

We sold our house last month and our new one is due to be completed at the end of February. I'm finally going to buy a new vacuum. I'm polling about the Dyson Animal. Anyone have it? Opinons please.

I have it, and I love it. Mine is an older version - I bought it in '03, I think. They've made some improvements since then. But I've got no complaints about mine. It works wonders on all the pet hair. :)

while people are responding..I need one for my new tile floors. I have no idea how to care for them. What about those new ones that are just for hardwood/tile floors? I saw a Bissel one at Home Depot. Any opinions?

Getting a new vacuum, too...keep the opinions coming!

I don't have the Dyson Animal, but I do have the Dyson DC-14 Low Reach vacuum, which I love. I've heard that the Dyson Animal is great for picking up pet hair.

lol... again... yes! i have the dyson animal.. and LOVE it! had it for a couple of years with 2 VERY furry dogs (samoyeds) and 2 cats... now... sadly down to 1 furry dog and 2 cats... but LOTS of desert sand still!

as an aside... tried the roomba for a couple of weeks.. loved the concept... hated the "maintenance" work! had to clean the rollers every other time or so! got real old, real quick! at first it was great! loved having a freshly vacuumed house all the time! but once the brush got some hair.. even with taking it off almost every time.. it would stall! may be great for an animal-less house? but not good at all for a dog and cat house! sadly.. had to take it back and continue to vacuum "by hand"

if anything ever happens to the dyson... i would probably replace it with another one.. cuz i'm sure they are only improving over the years (and ours is already a few years old... 2 or 3? we got it just after sears first started selling them in the US)

I just went through this painful new vacuum decision. I looked long and hard at the Dyson Animal. I really wanted to buy one but I couldn't find the one piece of info I needed to justify spending the extra $2-300 bucks over the top rated *economy* vacuums.

I usually get the highest rated Eureka or Hoover of the moment (Hoover has been garbage for a while). These vacuums work fine for me in their early days. I don't know that a Dyson or any other higher end vac would do much better of a job than my new Eureka. It seems to me to do a great job on the pet hair and all the other messes I have. The problem is that performance goes down and they need to be replaced in 2 or 3 years. I couldn't find anything about the durability of the Dyson. I would think if I shelled out that much more money that it would last a good while longer than my cheapo vacs, but I could find nothing to tell me this. So... is it true? How many years can you get out of a Dyson? I'm a avid :) vacuumer! I have dogs and cats and birds and kids and a bad messy DH and I vacuum at least once a day, some days 3 times. I love my vacuum!

Also I don't want a bagless (!). I want to change the bag and be done with it, not have to get the junk from tank into bag first. Do I remember right that Dyson only had bagless? Bummer. Hate bagless.

Keep 'em comin!

I have two 45 lb chow/shepherd mixes who do shed all year round! Is it difficult to operate when moving from floor to carpet and the telescoping wand? A girl demonstrated one for me at Best Buy and it seemed she was doing alot of manipulating.

I looked on Ebay and they had several reconditioned ones for about half price. I'm okay with reconditioned so I think I will go this route.

I love bagless!

Candi,

I have a Dyson. Not sure which model it is but my husband bought it probably about 3 years ago. It's the yellow one and we've since bought different attachments for it (that I think the Animal comes with).

Pros:
-bagless
-picks up cat hair well

Cons:
-using the wand is kind of a pain
-it's sort of big and awkward - not good for tighter spaces without the additional attachments - better for larger areas to vacuum (not bathrooms, etc.)

But as I said, ours is older, I'm not sure how much the newer models have improved.

We also have a canister vac (Kenmore I think). I actually prefer to use that. But I think Dyson now makes one as well so if I were to get a new vacuum, that might be the one I'd get.

Hope that helped some. Let me know if there are any other specific questions you have.

How timely. I just bought a Dyson Animal the week before Christmas. I LOVE it!

It is bagless and very easy to empty. When you move from carpet to hardwood (or vice versa) there is a little knob on the base you have to switch. I find that easy enough to do. I am really enjoying the wand, too. I've started adding on a little cleaning with the wand every time I vacuum - cleaning the blinds, vacuuming the stairs, cleaning the tops of the baseboards, etc. Takes a little getting used to, but WAY better than using attachments on standard vacs.

Hi Candi,
My sister bought the dyson animal last year, and loves it!! She has one dog (bull dog) I asked her a few weeks ago if she was still happy with it, and she said yes!! The suction is as good as the day she bought it!! Good luck, and btw watch for a 20% off coupon from linens and things or bed bath beyond that will save you some bucks when you buy it!! Good luck!!

I've done some research and it appears the canister is very popular in the UK but it's not widely distributed in the US. I saw it on EBAY for like $600. I just don't know if I'll be able to swing it but my thinking was that it would be easier to maneuver.

And thanks for the coupon idea but the fine print on both Linen's and Things and BB&B exclude the Dyson. Do you believe it?

I don't know about Dyson--I'm an Electrolux girl & have been my entire life (BTW they also have a hardwood floor setting).

They run over $1000, but I always manage to find a used one for $200-300. I bought a used one in 2000 (I think it was 2 years old at the time) & it's still going strong. It came w/the sidekick (a little attachable mini-vacuum) that's great for the couches & stairs. Electrolux sucks bigtime! :)

Okay...my experience is not so good.

I bought the Dyson last July. A week later a plastic part broke. I returned it for a new one. This one would only suck things up part of the time. I endured with this aggravation for nearly 6 months. But, in the end I returned it too. I will never own a Dyson again. It was just awful.

I ended up buying a Sebo. They are made in Germany and have a very strong motor. Go to your local vac and sew center and try different brands out. And, do some research online for consumer opinions. It was invaluable.

We have the Animal Dyson and I love it. 4 dogs, altho only one has longer hair. But sheds like you wouldn't believe. I have carpal tunnel and 2 herniated discs so vaccums must be light and easy to use and the wands have to be pretty flexible also. This one meets all my needs. I actually enjoy vaccuming now!

If you go in with the coupon I know that Bed Bath & Beyond will honor it. They are not allowed by Dyson to discount so they need to use the small print in the flyer.

My sister bought hers at bed bath beyond last year, and they did allow her to use the coupon???

Good luck:D

I have the Dyson Animal and I highly recommend it, its well worth the money. And I use it a lot because I have 2 dogs. Its an awesome machine!!!

I bought the Dyson Animal (purple/silver/gray) last year. According to the salesman, they all have the same size motor. That being said, the advantage w/ the Animal is the on-board tools and telescoping wand (which stores inside the hose. IMO, this vacuum is THE BEST. I have a medium coat German shepard and a smooth coat Jack Russell terrier. Both dogs shed year round. The JRT's hair sticks likes straight pins in my upholstered furniture. I purposely bought the Dyson to get the pet hair under control. (We had two cats as well, at the time of purchase). This vacuum does the job and it does it very well. Like anything that's new, it took a little getting used to, but I use it for all my floor to ceiling cleaning. I bought mine at Sears interest free for 12 months. At the end of 11 months I very happily paid the bill in full. If my Dyson met an untimely death, I'd buy another right away. I like it that much.
