Afro hair regimen for Hiit exercisers

Hello Everyone,

My question is addressed to anyone from African background (i.e African, African-american, afro caribbean) who is or possibly could experience salt deposit on scalp due to frequent Hiit session.

I love my sweat :D:D:D:Dand I am trying to plan a hair treatment regimen for my scalp. My scalp is dry and sensitive. I do relax my hair and sometime wear extension/weave.

Now my question is what is the best treatment to keep my scalp healthy and eventually not get burn when I get my hair relaxed;););).

A advise from a hair dresser would greatly helpful.

Thanks,

Hi Nathalie,

Unfortunately I cannot help with this because, even though I am of Caribbean descent, I have dreads. There was a long thread on the videofitness forum about hair care for black hair, and there was a product that was discussed that is supposed to absorb sweat more effectively, which might help with your conundrum. Here is the thread, Black women, hair and working out from Nicole Ari Parker - Video Fitness Forum. The product is mentioned in the first post.

Hope that helps, and that you get other responses. I do have a coworker who is black and who also works out, but I have not heard her mentioning this as an issue. She has recently started getting Brazilian blow outs as a way to straighten her hair instead of relaxing, and I can say it looks just as good if not better than when it's straightened because the BBB gives her hair more body, in addition to being straight. Not sure if those area available in the UK, though.

I have been blessed with "pelo malo" too. Three months ago I had a treatment called urban smooth. It is much more gentler than other chemical straightners. I also use Precious Oil shampoo and conditioner from Pureology which has zero sulfate. I usually tie a bandana or sweat band close to the hair to help catch the sweat but your still gonna sweat if your working out hard.;) I've heard good reviews on the argon oil to help calm the frizz, which after yesterday's humidity I'm going to try. The reviews on the Nicole doo wrap are not very good. Check out the youtube reviews.

I don't think I'm going to be much help. I don't have any issues with my scalp. I'm currently growing my hair out. I've been in a weave or braids since last Oct now. I found that short hair and working out do not mix for me. My hair was a constant fizzy mess  My hair dresser would tell me to keep it wrapped up while I worked out, which helped some but it would still fizz out because it was so short. When my hair was longer, I could just put it up in a ponytail and be fine afterwards. So I'm going back to that! The other thing my hair dresser told me was to keep some oil in my hair. The oil repels the sweat and helps with the fizz. This did help some.

As far as burning during a relaxer...does your hair dresser use base before she/he applys the relaxer? Mine does and I don't burn. But I also don't think my scalp is sensitive, which probably has more to do with it than the base.

Thanks ladies for replying,

I am an African descent, precisely from central Africa (French speaking country called Congo/formelly called Zaire)

I must admit i do have a hair band but do not always wear it.:mad::mad:I will make sure to wear all the time while doing cardio.
I agree with wrapping hair while exercising but not fully. It is recommended to partially wrap the hair but also letting air in. I usually work out in pony tail.

The issue I am having in terms of the burn while having a relaxe is on the hair line.it does happen occasionally though. I noticed it does happen when i do not treat my scalp few days prior to relaxing my hair. We do have eczema running in the familly and it does happen my scalp get itchy. That is the reason why I have to do scalp treatment. My question was more about hair products I could possibly use to treat my scalp.

I think I will do basic hot coconut oil and dead sea salt conditionner.

Let me know if you know any other product I could try.

To Eva,

We do have Brazilian blow dry in UK. It is getting popular now. I am going to have to grow my hair virgin and try it. I have actually thought about it. One of my friend is into it and I must admit the result is better than a relaxe in terms of the body.

To Tony,

My hair dresser does base my scalp.;)

Even when I wear a hair band for my hair line, my hair still frizz. I just blow dry it ,selecting cool air option and I am ready to go.:D:D:D

I love my exercise and I just need to find a way around the sweating :D:D:D.

Kind Regards Ladies ;)

Hi Nathalie! I saw a Q & A on a blog that I follow that gave a tip on how to treat your hair for an intense workout. I'm not computer savvy, so I copied and pasted the response. Hope it helps!

Two tricks that work for me during those extra sweaty workout weeks:

1 - Moisturize your bun before practice (preferably with a light oil)! This will create a barrier for the salt so it won’t hit your scalp/strands as easily.

2- After practice, massage your scalp with a mixture of Peppermint Essential Oil (this is an anti bacterial that will help your scalp breathe) and Jojoba Oil (this will replenish any lost moisture) to help break down the odor causing salt!

Then when the weekend hits, wash everything out! Use an apple cider vinegar rinse once a month, too! To help control any buildup from the salt and use of oils. Hope that helps <3
