AFAA PT Cert.

Checking in to see if anyone has taken the AFAA Personal Trainer Certification. If so, any tips would be appreciated. I am taking the exam in less than two weeks!

Thanks! Lynn

Good luck! I'm sure you've checked out the AFAA website. I know there are plenty of Cathe members who have talked about becoming certified so I would do a quick search on this website. I am taking the ACE certification in February so I can relate. Let us know how you do. How long have you been studying for the test? Lisa

I took it a year ago and passed, I think I only missed 4 questions. This is my advice. Review the material before you go, as you're supposed to. Make sure that your evening before the test (usually Sat. I think) is free because you will spend several hours studying. The muscle action and plane were the most difficult parts for me, and for others I know. Good luck,
Meredith

Thanks! I will check the website. I have only been studying this past week, so I have cut myself short. Life is so busy for me right now. It was not the perfect time to schedule, but I wanted the APEX price. I think I can crunch and make some progress though (hopefully!).

The joint action is the hardest for me to get too. It just has not yet registered. Is this a large part of the exam?

Hi Lynn!
I took the AFAA PT Cert about a year and a half ago and it wasn't that hard and I'm not that bright!!:+ The instructor goes over everything you will need to know before the exam. Be sure and be familiar with the practical part. That was the only section of the test that made me nervous. Good luck!!! You'll do great!!!:7

Hi Sherry! Thanks for your encouragement. Believe it or not the thing I have the most anxiety over right now is being away from my kids for that many hours three days in a row!! Of course, I may grow to appreciate the time to myself.

I do need to prepare a little more, though, so I do feel more confident and comfortable about the material. It's good to know they review everything ahead of time, they did that with group fitness as well (very helpful!).

I will let you know how I do....right now I don't intend on doing any personal training, but I teach a few strength classes, so I am excited to get this certification as well...

Thanks again! Lynn:)

Hi there,

I'm wondering what the difference is between AFAA and ACE? Are they equally good Certification boards? I would like to become a Personal Trainer also. I have heard a good deal about NFPT and NESTA. I just don't want to get certified and find that a club I want to work in wont accept my certification. Any wisdom out there as to the most "credible" organization?

Thanks, Deb

There are a TON of organizations that offer PT certifications. Some even offer online certification. I chose AFAA because it is well known and seems to be universally accepted. Also, it is beneficial for me because they offer the certification in my town and twice a year they run an APEX where the cost of certification is reduced. I also am group certified through them.

ACE seems to be on the same par with AFAA. Actually, if ACE offered certifications closer to my location I may have went through them because they seem to accept CEU's from more sources than AFAA (seems AFAA mostly accepts AFAA CEU's, IMO).

Anyway, if you are concerned about what the club you want to work at will accept, give them a call and ask.

Hope this was helpful. Lynn

Hi there,

Thanks, Lynn, for your prompt response! I live in Central California and will have to travel a good 300 miles to get ACE or AFAA certified. However, there is a Personal Trainer in town that is qualified to give me the NFPT PT test. I know that NFPT is one of hte newest boards on the block, so to speak, so this makes me a bit nervous. By the way, what are CEU's? Thanks again~Deb

CEU's are continuing education credits. To keep a certification in AFAA you need 15 CEU's every two years, in addition to CPR certification, which needs renewed every year.

I think you will be fine to go with NFPT. My opinion is people first want to know if you are certified, through who is secondary. And like I said, you could always call a few gyms in your area if want to feel better about it before you sign up. I have a friend who owns a PT studio and he just wants his trainers certified (he doesn't care through who) and then he "grooms" them.

The only other benefit to go through ACE or AFAA is if you want to pursue other cetifications as well. For instance, my PT certification course will count as my CEU's for my group fitness certification...

Hope this helps! Lynn:)

Hi there~

Thanks again for your response! I feel encouraged to ask the gym about NFPT...thanks. I think you are right about being certified, primarily and then learning more as you go...Gosh, I think about what I have learned through my general fitness, group fitness experience and all the reading etc. that I do. Thanks again for your input. I value it very much. Deb
