Cathlete
i have my first ever apt with a chiropractor(sp??) tomorrow morning and i would like to know what to expect and any advise you may have on what to ask and stuff like that. TIA

Way to go Jes!!! I've gone to one regularly for about 7 years. Make sure they take X-rays before he does any adjustments. It is good also to see how much is covered by your insurance. And you need to feel comfortable with the Chiropractor. Let him or her talk and you will know what to ask. I am lucky though as my nephew became one and so he is treating me now...:)...Carole

Sorry...I forgot to ask why are you going??

thanks Carole the allknowing one:) i am not sure what an adjustment is, but i have had alot of consistant pain in my neck and lower back for quite some time and i have tried ice, heat, stretching and enough is enough! thanks for the tips. i will definitely get xrays first! i'm a little afraid of getting my bones cracked(in the words of the fabulous Eddie Izard):p

Hey Jes!

I had my monthly adjustment this afternoon. Todays appointment was very timely after the weekend roadtrip. I have been going for about 5 years now.

On my first visit they took xrays and I met with my chiropractor briefly. Then I went back the next day and he went over the xrays with me, how often I should plan on coming in and how long my insurance would cover treatment.

Initially, I was going 3 times/week for a few months. Then once a week until now I go only for maintenance once a month. I so look forward to my visits and they are sorely needed by the time it is time to go again.

My chiro has also helped with my fitness goals and has worked on muscle groups that get overly tight from time to time.

He gave me my first stability ball way back in the beginning so that I would stretch out my back in between visits. He has also recommended I use a water pillow to sleep on. It has helped my neck pain tremendously.

If he moved...I would have to go with him...LOL!

My 16 year old son also goes for adjustments, as he has scoliosis and was having tremendous pain.

Hope that helps!

Tammy

Oh NO..They feel SSSOOOOOO good! The sound can be scary sometimes, but I totally trust him.

I got my pillow at his office, but they can also be found online. I totally recommend getting one, as it molds to your body. It is heavy as hell, but has helped so much with my neck pain. I think I paid around $35. for it...worth every penny.

Let me know how the visit goes! Good Luck!

Tammy

Hey Jes, that sucks that you've been having pain in your back and neck. Good for you for exploring non-pharmaceutical ways to get relief. I work in a chiro clinic and really enjoy the atmosphere and rapport that people have with the chiropractors and massage therapists. The chiropractors in our clinic adjust patients manually and with an activator (which is kind of like the clicky end of a pen only bigger) they go up and down the spine with it and it sounds a bit like a staple gun. I have had many adjustments in the past 2 years and would not describe them as painful, it's more like a John Cougar Mellencamp thing.....'hurts so good'.:) Don't hesitate to tell the chiro that you are nervous, she or he should be aware of this as adjustments are much better when the patient is truly relaxed, I find this especially with c-spine or neck adjustments. Good luck tomorrow, let us know how it goes. I don't know if it's like this in the States but here in Canada many chiros will get you to pay upfront and give you a reduced cost. A lot of people here don't realise that if they don't use up all of the visits they are most definitely entitled to get the remainder of their money back.

Take Care
Laurie:)

Jes,

You maybe a little sore that night or the day after, your first adjustment, depends on how far out you are. But you're use to this soreness you do, Cathe. And that's what it feels like; you just worked out really hard the day before.

Also have you ever popped your knuckles or your elbows etc? This is what it feels like to get manual adjusted. If they use other methods which they normally do, you'll either get the little *gun* it basically pokes you, and puts pressure on a vertebra and puts it in place. Doesn't hurt but feels weird.

And when you get on the table, try to relax, take some deep breaths, and clear your mind and think of a nice fun place. This will help keep you from tensing, the more you tense the hard it is to put you back in place and the more sore you'll feel, as your fighting being re-aligned with your muscles.

But I get adjusted about once a month and have for years, ever since the chiropractor was able to figure out what the medical doctors couldn't of 12 years of tests, flying in experts from all over the world and hospital stay after stay. I now believe in them whole heartedly.

Basically your get x-rays, a heat test, and then they’ll talk to you and show you the problem. Then adjust you. This appointment takes the longest, all other appointments from then on will be a lot shorter. I’m usually in and out in less then 20 minutes for my adjustment.

Jes, I have never had an adjustment that hurt! It is like Kit said when you crack your knuckles. I adjust my knees all the time and have done that for years, kinda like the knuckle cracking. Chiro's don't really like to hear the word "crack", they prefer adjustment....:)...I really hope they can help your pain....please let us know...:)...Carole

i just hope they don't tell me to stop doing aerobics:eek: That is my worst fear!!! You can get your knees adjusted ar the chrio???? mine have been killing me for months, should i mention that too? y'all are the best! i am so glad i asked this question eover here!

As a matter of fact you can get your knees adjusted and your ankles too. But what I meant was I adjust my knees all by myself. I doubt they will tell you to stop doing aerobics. Mention whatever hurts Jes.......:)...Carole

Hi jes
actually my chiro DID tell me to stop doing weights and high impact aerobics..the weights were easy cuz I didnt do much of them to begin with but I have continued with the aerobics cuz its my only stress reliever. My neck and lower back hurt just like yours. After about 2 months of heat pads, adjustments, massage therapy and electrode treatment, an mri showed a herbiated disc in my neck which takes a little longer to heal(so Im told). I feel a little better now, been goin since feb and down to 1 visit a week but my chiro said i will be goin for maintenance every month for the rest of my life cuz they never heal, the only way to fix it is surgery and mine is not serious enough for that.

Well, i saw the chiro. he was very nice. he did xrays and i am going back tomorrow for treatment. he has to look at them and see what the problem is. so i don't know anything yet, but he said the high impact aerobics need to go and i should get a recumbant bike or do water aerobics. we'll see. he says the neck pain is what has been causing my horrible headaches most likely.

jes:(

I've been to about 5 different chiropractors in my life. They all have a bit different styles ( some have you exhale when they adjust, others don't...depends on their schooling and theory of adjustment). Some are "rougher" than others (I like it a bit rough!) and with others, you barely hear a crack (by "rough," I don't mean that it hurts at all).

Some chiropractors will do extremity adjustments (arms and legs), while others don't.

Some just want to suck as much money out of you as they can (I only hit one of those so far), but most are legit. Make sure you get a treatment plan (X number of appointments per week for X amount of time) instead of something open ended (though you eventually will be on maintenance, and go to see the chiropractor as needed).

Remember that if THIS particular chiropractor doesn't work out for you, it doesn't mean that chiropractic won't. It's very good for spinal problems and back pain. I went to my first chiropractor after I fell off a horse (actually, the horse fell, I was on the horse so I fell too, and he almost fell on me but righted himself just before he did). "regular" alopathic doctors found "nothing wrong" (though it took me 15 minutes to get out of bed in the morning, crying through part of it because of the pain), but the chiropractor had me feeling better in just a couple of sessions.

Another chiropractor helped me when I had a "axe blade in the head" headache that lasted going on 4 weeks. I had x rays, a Cat scan, MRI, and noone found anything. Meantime, I was in pain every day. Then I went to my chiropractor (actually, "back" to him, because I'd been adjusted before all the tests but it didn't help) and felt better immediately.

One creepy thing is when I get my neck adjusted. I keep telling my chiropractor that I've seen martial arts movies where people are killed by the same move, but he assures me that he wouldn't know how to kill anyone. LOL!

Jes,

A lot of times the high impact aerobics is only stoped temporarily. But your body does take a beating with high impact. When you do too much impact, and can knock your whole body out of place. I've actually seen people get re-aligned, and they go do high-impact step, and get x-rays again, and it's almost like there spine turn into a zig-zag. The good news is you can get re-aligned and then strengthen your muscles with weights and get back to your high impact aerobics if you really need it. But a lot of times you can burn fat just as good with low-impact aerobics. And you may end up finding your fat burning heart rate. Most of us has this one heart rate that just burns fat like no tomorrow, and it's usually on the lower end, and not in with the high intensity heart rate. LIke for example my super fat burning heart rate is 112, at that rate, the calories I burn are nearly 70% fat. But I'm bored with a heart rate of 112, but I always make sure I spend 30 minutes there, as when I do, I can actually burn two pounds of fat off my body per week doing that. Then I get my heart rate up to about 160-170 and feel the burn.

So this really isn't such a bad thing, as you may find your max fat burning heart rate and be able to hold it there and do twice the fat removal you were doing with your high-impact.

But yes you can have horrible headaches from your neck being out, when I have a super bad headache I call my chriopractor he comes down to my office and adjusts me on one of our weight benches. And the headahe is gone in less then two minutes. This is because one of the nerves is being pinches or the bone is blocking the spinal fluid channel, and you got pressure on your brain. Both are easy to fix, as all you need is a re-alignment.

It's actually good the doctor wanted to really study your x-rays, that's a good sign of a doctor who actually wants to know rather then one who takes a glance and tells you this this and this is wrong.

thanks for the info ladies. i am very curous to hear what he says tomorrow and i went recumbant bike shopping today.

jes;-)

The recumbant bike was one of the best purchases I made last year :7 . I love the programs and it has really leaned out my leg alot, and they weren't big to begin with though. Although my SO says my legs are to hard to be comfortable to lay on now :( Check out the schwinns they are a great brand. It a nice change of pace and I still do a little running and kick, punch, crunch.
Good luck with your back, neck and knees.
