Adjusting my obsessive cardio needs?

Bunbun

OK, I now have a 6-6.5 daily walk ahead of me because of the NYC Transit strike. So....I guess I should not do my usual 4-5 mile racewalk/jog on my treadmill? Even though my walk to work will be at a much slower speed and also filled with stops as I wait for traffic lights, etc? Yes, I know I'm obsessive about my cardio! It really stinks because this weekend was the first time that I got back onto my treadmill after being sick with a lousy cold for two weeks. :(

I think cutting back on the walking would be good now. You certainly don't need to walk to work and then come home and do 5 more miles. Try to preserve your energy so you don't get sick.

I'm very obsessive also, but if I were you I'd do the walk to and from work and either skip the treadmill walk or do a shorter one. Maybe tack on a 2-3 mile one if you find your commute walk doesn't do the trick for you. I'm assuming you'll be carrying stuff on your commute walk, so that will kick it up a notch in intensity.
Just Do It! :)

I agree with Debbie...plus the fact, walking in this icey weather is no bargain either. It will probably wear you down a lot faster than your usual exercise routine would. Take it easy. :)

Thanks--don't have much to carry except for my food for the day. Now if I decide to work at home tomorrow, I'll have to schlepp my laptop computer home--that'll add enough pounds to make a difference. Am trying to avoid that, though, because I don't have a backpack carrying case for my laptop, and the shoulder bag that I do have for it will just hurt to carry for that far a distance. The worst part about this is that I will have hat hair all day at work--no way am I going to walk that far in this weather without a hat!! (Forgive my whining!)

i did a 6 miler yesterday so you would be surprise how intense you can make it. i made the first 3 miles in 28 mins. the 3 miles back was a little tougher with the groceries but it made for great resistance up the hills. still made pretty good time in less then 30 mins.

but i would do a shorter cardio at home if you think you need a little more after your walk, but you will be surprise for the first few days how it can wipe you out.

During the last NYC transit strike, 25 years ago, wearing sneakers to work (and carrying your foot-crippling high heels in your briefcase) became socially acceptable/semi-stylish. Maybe this time around hat hair will became a fad? :)

Wow, Kassia--3 miles in 28 minutes is really fast for walking. Did you run it?!

You could always jog in place when you're stopped at lights. It's NY---I'm sure no one will even notice--LOL!

lol no i can run the 3miles in 19 mins. i was quite surprised for the quick walk too. i didn't realize i was going THAT fast. i was just proud to do it. almost making a statement that i don't need to wait til dh comes home with car and waste more gas. my two feet can do all the work

Well, I did the 3.5 miles in about 50 minutes, so that's a good workout. But, wow, am I ever going to have shin splints tomorrow from walking fast on hard pavement--I can feel it already. Also, I have to go buy some long underwear at lunch! My upper body was plenty warm--I actually opened my jacket halfway there cause I was overheating. But even with stockings on under my jeans, my legs and butt froze--still cold now, 40 minutes after I walked into my office.

As for cursing under my breath, don't worry, I did plenty of that. Too many people just moseying along, sightseeing instead of walking briskly! Get out of my way! }(

Good for you Bunbun, you did great! I sympathize with you about the strike, I live in New York also, but I don't have to deal with the subways or trains to work. It's all about adjusting to the situation, who knows, you may end up dropping an unexpected pound or two;).

By the way, I bought some Cuddl Duds (long johns) this weekend at JC Penny's--they were half off! great deal, got'em for $13 bucks. You may want to go there and get some, if one's around where you live. Macy's has them also, but they were'nt half-off :).

Good luck,

Katrina

Thanks, Katrina. I'm going to try Paragon at lunch, since it's in the neighborhood of my office. Don't want to walk (ugh) up to Macy's!
