I had never understood how giving stimulant medications to a child who is hyperactive and unable to focus could be helpful until I read the book "Sleep Interrupted" by Dr. Steven Park. Chronic sleep deprivation (not just quantity, but quality) leads to many health and quality of life problems that we chalk up to stress & aging. Stimulants (like caffeine, nicotine, methylphenidate) counteract the effects of sleep deprivation (irritability, anger, and decreased ability to cope with stress) from not breathing well at night, and leads to a calming effect.
