ACSM Certification?

I'm about to study for the ACSM personal trainer certification. Is anyone around here certified through them?

Nope, I went through ACE. I'm sure the ACSM test is much more difficult. Does the ACSM have sponsored review classes through Exercise Etc? I went to their weekend class before taking the test and found it to be really informative. I know they review the NSCA test which is probably as difficult and prestigious as the ACSM. Good luck to you Amy!

I will be after next semester! I'm in school for an associates degree in execise science and I may continue on to get a bachelors depending on whether I can find a good job or not. The test is easier than it used to be (according to my advisor), they got rid of the practical portion of the exam - thank God! Practical exams are so nerve racking. I might also take the NSCA exam, I don't know much about it though.

When are you taking the exam? If you are taking it next year make sure you have the 2006 book - we have the 2005 and we had to go through and make some changes to some of the guidelines that have been changed for next year.

I have all the 2005 books and I was hoping to take the exam really soon. LOL, not that I've studied...
I would do the ACE exam, but I can't take that whenever I choose- it was only available to take in May and I don't want to wait that long. ACSM lets you take it on a computer whenever you choose.

what does the abbreviations stand for? i am interested in getting certified but dont know where to do this at.

American College of Sports Medicine. The ACSM and the NSCA are considered the "gold standard" for certifications in fitness. ACE is well respected as well.

ACSM - American College of Sports Medicine (best one to get, in my opinion)
ACE- American Council on Exercise (very common among trainers)
NSCA - National Strength and Conditioning Association (good if you want to work w/ athletes; training football players, etc)

Hope that helps!

What do you guys think? I don't know that I'll be able to study for the ACSM before school starts up again. Do you think if I study the ACSM materials but go take the ACE exam I'll do okay? I've heard the ACE exam is more common sense and ACSM is more physiology/biology/anatomy.

The ACE exam is just plain easy, let's face it. People will often take it just to get themselves into the training industry. It's the easiest one to get and basically anyone can pass it. As far as certifications go I wouldn't consider it anything special.
The top certifications are NSCA, ACSM, ISSA, and NASM. These programs are much more in-depth.

Wow, did you take the ACE exam? I took in in August and did not find it to be "plain easy". I was dissapointed that it didn't cover much of the anatomy and kinesiology I studied(but that materia was in the manual). It did cover a lot of legal issues which I found annoying. I'd have to disagree with the statement that "anyone can pass it". While I was there, I met plenty of people who were re-taking it because they had failed it the first time. I also met quite a few who had failed the Group Instructor Exam and were re-taking that one as well.(BTW, I took both exams and passed both as well).
I'm sure the ACSM exams are more in depth but the ACE is still nothing to turn your nose up to. I thought it was worth taking. ACE also offers a Clinical Exercise Specialist certification which I've heard some really good things about. I believe it's considered more of an advanced personal training certificate that is worth looking into.
