Cathlete
I have been using your cardio workouts successfully to keep my COPD at bay for a couple of years. Knock on a big old Oak tree, I still do not need any other treatments.
The Hiit 40/20 has been a bit challenging for me to breath through lately. I did Tabatacise 1-5 today and the workout was much easier on my breathing. Are the benefits concerning the lungs the same or does one type work the lungs harder? I truly appreciate all the variety of your workouts. It has allowed me to stay consistent and injury free with very real health benefits. Thank You for all you do. Peggy

Poohpeggy you are an inspiration doing hiit workout with COPD (just wow) The nurse in me is very impressed. I would stick to Tabatacise and not worry if you can't do 40/20. I don't know exercise science but routinely have Vent patients. We pretty much keep an artificial cycle for the lung capacity. Its precision timed and pressured. I think that you have a accomplished a great deal with your lung/cardio capacity.

This is a non medical article regarding lung capacity during workouts.

My personal opinion is in regard to what's best for your lungs would be to skip 40/20. You may be able to do it the future but for now your lungs aren't ready.

You have accomplished a great deal don't be discouraged.

I'm just use to sick sick people and sees lots of copd patients on vents. I'm just really impressed with your accomplishment.

@Cafelattee What is COPD?

I am glad Cafelattee bumped in this thread. I saw it a while ago and forgot to post my 2 cents. To reply to your question, Tabata is
a Hiit workout. There are many forms of Hiit 30/30 is also a High intensity interval training. When done properly meaning giving your
all within a preset time slot
. In this case 30 seconds --- you go ALL OUT during that time! Tabata is a 20/10 repeated 8 times to add up to 4 minutes, which much more demanding on your lungs. When done the way it should be, it is not for heart fainters --- Just saying people:)!

As cafelattee suggested, please do not feel pressured to go beyond what your lungs can take in at this point. You will get where you want to be in terms of VO2max but listen to your body. I have read your posts and I know you like what I call phewie-stuff Imaxes.....
You get benefit from any type of Hiit so rest assured you are in very good track in terms gaining improved Vo2max.
All the very best:);)

@Cafelattee What is COPD?

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease I had one doctor describe it as a life long asthma attack and another compare it to living daily with Pneumonia. Its a disease of limited oxygen supply to the lungs. I would venture if you see some one in public with a O2 tank they have the disease. Poohpeggy is one determine awesome lady actively working toward keeping the the disease from worsening. The disease taxes the whole cardiovascular system overtime. She really is doing the best thing and that exercising . I bet she is one of the few that are really pushing. I'm guessing most would consider a light walk exercise with this disease . SHe is doing freaking tabatas Just awsome

Thank You!! Exercise is my favorite medicine for many things!! All this support is such a boost!!!:):):)

I was asthmatic up to my teen age time! I am one of those who naturally got delivered from asthma
during the transition to adulthood! I can recall all symptoms having difficulties breathing: abdominal wall collapsing,
breathing out taking longer and getting noisy etc....It was horrible.:(:(:( That was since my childwood.
I had a crisis litterally every two to three weeks!

@poohpeggy You are a warrior. Glad you don't get defeited by the condition.:)
:)

Thank You. It is scary sometimes and definitely uncomfortable. When Cathe says, "are you seeing stars yet" I relate!!

I know, sometimes I wish I was on the same mindset back then:eek:

While jumping up and down gasping 4 air, we are just gone, we just do it!

When I feel the benefit while quickly walking on a steep hill without being out of breath, I get such an empowering
feeling. I love the tickling feeling at the back of my leg while enjoying an easy and smooth breathing:)
