? about soy and omega-3s

Anna, yes, there are some unsweetened soy milks but they're tougher to find. Silken tofu (the kind found in aeseptic packages) is good for smoothies too.

I lost track of who posted what, but here goes...

Most soy milk is calcium fortified. DH is lactose intolerant & now uses soy milk & calcium fortified oj as his primary sources of calcium.

Canola as a source of omega-3 is from Liz Applegate's book "Eat Smart Play Hard". She's on the food science faculty at UC Davis & seems like a reliable source. I've also read it in Vegetarian Times magazine. I realize some (Dean Ornish?) prefer olive oil over canola oil but I still use both. Olive oil in muffins just sounds weird.

Andrea, I think you're right about the Asian lifestyle having a huge impact on their health. It's not just diet, but it's physical & mental activity, family support, community ties. Ditto with the mediteranean diet or the French paradox.

RE: Kathryn

I know what you mean about horse pills! Seems like most calcium supplements are HUGE! Don't worry, OmegaZen is an oil that comes in a veggie gelatin capsule.

I am a breast cancer survivor and I had two oncologists from different offices tell me to stay away from soy. Soy contains phytoestrogens, a plant based form of estrogen. The FDA labeled estrogen as a carcinogen. If you check the labels on just about all of your prepackaged food, everything contains soy. Do you really need to add more to your diet? Please, everybody, when reading books that make any type of medical claim, remember they are based on old research. It can take a book up to two years to be published and an awful lot can change in the medical field in that time. As a side note, I would like to challenge everyone to schedule their mammogram for the new year. Take care and have a blessed new year!

DML is absolutely correct, make sure you do ALL the research before embarking on a soy diet. May I recommend a book called "Nourshing Traditions," by Sally Fallon and Mary G. Enig, PHD. The thing to remember is that many products are touted as healthy simply because they had the $$ to hire the best lobbyists.

Take a good, long look at a lot of stuff we've been 'fed' about what we eat, then make your own decision, based on the actual facts, not recommendations from those who profit from them.
