?about how to start a running program

I've never been a runner, but would like to give it a try. Any suggestions on how to get started? I'd really appreciate your expert input.
Thanks,

HI! Not Cathe, but I can tell you what I did when I started a running program. I was not a runner at all, but I did walk every night. I started to walk for 5 minutes and then run for 1 minute, walk 5 then run 1. I kept repeating that pattern for 30-45 minutes depending on how much time I had. I did that for one week. The next week I tried walking 4 minutes, running 2 minutes etc. Every week or every two weeks, depending on how I felt, I would decrease my walking time and increase the running time. I also read the book Running for Dummies, which actually had a program in it and some good tips about running form. When I got to the point where I was running more than walking I decided to set a goal to run a 5K and two years ago I ran my first one and have been hooked ever since.:)

HAPPY ST. PATRICK's DAY!!!!

A GREAT way to begin is to use Hal Higdon's workouts. He is a master runner and coach - www.halhigdon.com

For my 5k training to my marathon training I have used his workouts.
ENJOY!! Congrats on starting something new!!

All the above advice is awesome! I was never a runner, but always an athlete. I started running 2 years ago and used a training schedule based on Jeff Galloway's 'teachings'. Now, though, I'm using Runner's World programs!

Also, join us on the check-in boards, folks, at the Cheetah Check In. Great support and awesome ladies over there!

I agree with the walk/run method! It's the best way to do it! When I first started running about a year ago I could barely run for a minute or 2 at a slow pace. Now my longest steady state run is 6 miles (could be longer but I haven't been increasing mileage at all for a while) and my speed has naturally picked up alot too!

I check in with the Cheetahs. I second that you should come by and visit us some time!

Good luck!:+

I agree w/ Beth. I started out walking2 miles. Then I fast walked for a few weeks. 2 miles was taking me about 45 minutes. I then ran some/walked some for a few weeks. Then I tried running. (I was a runner in High School-27 yrs. ago) I thought it was like riding a bike... It took a few weeks till I could run the 2 miles w/out walking. Now 2+ yrs. later, I am running 2.5-3 miles 3x/week. And I love it. Start slow:) Good Luck. Also, make sure you have GOOD running shoes. I use Asics Gel 1110. Enjoy, Gettingfitmom
