I have been reading all this stuff about only doing 3 cardio HIIT sessions a week. I would really like to do this but I dont want to give up my 5 miles + runs. so I guess I am in limbo on gettin the benefits of trying this to see what changes I could reap with this type of cardio instead of doing the lower heart rate thing. can one do these workouts and then a few other runs a week and still get the benefits that is suppose to come from shorter cardio higher intensity training?someone posted about a women that has book out about shorter cardios with higher intensity and how she ended up getting the best body ever. she also did this with wt training. I think it was called yummymummy.

I'm not an expert, but from what I've read, HIIT sh/would be done in addition to your other cardio. So if you do, say, 2 HIIT sessions in a week, then if you want to do your long runs (well, 5+ miles is REALLY long for me ;) ) you should. And you should see improvements in your longer runs--cardio capacity and times. FWIW. I'm sure others with more knowledge will chime in on this.

No expert either, but I try to split up my cardio between long steady state runs and HIIT. Ever since I started HIIT, it's hard for me not to want to do it all the time because it's such a quick way to squeeze in my cardio!

I know that one can do both but according to these studies people are getting better results only doing the high intensity workouts 3x week 20-30 minutes and that is the only cardio they do,other days are strictly wts. I could do this if I didnt enjoy running aty least 3x week . I also want to increase my running pace so I dont want give up any of my running. but I want to try to do this type of training to see if that is what my body needs to shock it and get some real results. so i guess could I use my running as the HIIT and go longer than the 30 minutes with my runs but limit the intervals to no more than 30min and still get the same benefits that the body for life claims you will get as well as the abs diet, and fityummymummy books all claim . thanks

Laura - here is a thread from the STS forum I found interesting:

http://69.0.137.118/dc/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=12&topic_id=733&mesg_id=733&page=

Made me wonder if an HIIT could be a run and if you wanted to go longer then what about splitting into two sessions?

Also thought about the P90X series where if you want to drop pounds, you just add an extra half hour of cardio in the AM and work out in the PM.

Have been very curious about this myself and have actually cut out most of my running and am using a FitnessFreak rotation that limits the cardio. Am not dropping weight but feel "tighter". When I'm done with this I will be curious as to how my running stamina will be.

THANKS! all this talk about HIIT has me wondering and I think starting this week I will be adding it to my workouts and see what kind of results I get. I want to get leaner . I started adding heavier wt routines this week as well. I hope I see a change, I am exicted about it and really hope my body responds to this type of training.
