AAARRRRGGHHHH! I'm venting

L Sass

Cathlete
Didn't listen to my body and now I'm paying for it! I've been really dizzy for the last 2 days and suffering from a bit of overtraining. I'm supposed to start the boot camp rotation on Monday and knew I should have taken a day or 2 off. But I pushed it. I was doing SP&J this morning, and on the 3rd cardio segment got really dizzy, rolled my ankle and heard it CRACK as I was falling to the floor/}( }(

I've been nursing it and thinking no biggie all day, but it is big, and ugly. So I'm off to the hospital for an x-ray. And we all know the lesson - listen to your body!!!!!!! Stupid!

Lorrie

Oh Lorrie!!! I hope it's all right, but it does not sound good. I'm so sorry for you. Take care. Do keep us posted.

Marla

Oh no - that doesn't sound good at all. I broke my ankle in '97 and also heard a loud crack. I ended up having two surgeries on it and it took a year to fully heal. I hope that you have a better outcome.

Please let us know what happens.

Erica

I hope it's not bad. Sometimes I will forget to drink/eat ANYTHING especially if I am doing a project around the house and I will start to get dizzy . Then I stop and think: when did I last eat/drink? Let us know what they say. I hate taking the pain meds they perscribe. :-(

RE: AAARRRRGGHHHH! I'm venting - UPDATE

Thanks for all of your well wishes. I was at the ER till midnight, and my ankle is only severely sprained - thank goodness. But I have 2 questions for all of you.

1. Doc told me to wait 3 WEEKS before resuming working out. Would / could you wait that long? I already started losing my mind when he just said the words. I know there is no way I can do that. Could you? (AND I'm all pumped to start BC rotation Monday)

2. They ran a bunch of lab tests in that I had been dizzy (DH says I always am :) ) and they told my I was dehydrated, so they pumped me full of a saline IV drip before I could leave. Here's my question. I drink at least 2 gallons of water a day. Water is really all I drink, but for the occasional tea or maybe coffee, but mostly water, and a lot of it. And I drink it because I like it. How could I have been dehydrated?! Doc said if I'm going to work out as much as I do I have to use gatorade (ugh!) or another sports drink. Is that what you all do?

So I am severly bumming today, though I know I should be very thankful. I could be in the Katrina fiasco. But I'm still bummed. Thanks for listening!

RE: AAARRRRGGHHHH! I'm venting - UPDATE

Lorrie thank God it was just a sprain. I personally would follow his advice and not workout for the 3 weeks. Your ankle is already compromised and you can risk further damage if you didn't give it the complete rest it needs to heal. Maye you can do most seated or laying down upper body exercises so you won't feel so bad. Anything that doesn't require weght-bearing on your ankle.

As far as the dehydration, that is strange, especially if you hydrate yourself all day long. Are you sure you are really taking in as much fluids as you say? Are you sipping water before, during and after your workouts?

Well, I'd personally follow the Doc's advice. Good luck to you.

RE: AAARRRRGGHHHH! I'm venting - UPDATE

Hi, Lorrie - glad to hear it's "only severely sprained" - like that's a whole lot of fun.

A couple of suggestions / thoughts:

It might be your doctor meant 3 weeks off of impact-oriented, weight-bearing exercise (can you spell C-A-R-D-I-O?). If so, and it's only weight-bearing exercise you need to avoid, I'd suggest quickly buying an Aqua Jogger and hitting the pool's deep end for some zero-impact deep water workouts. There's a thread on that subject that happened this week (and that your Genios A-Jock Who Cant Spel) contributed to; do a search for "Aqua Jogging: Anyone Tried That?" and you'll get some good ideas. Also, use the time to target the upper body and core muscles. I can't believe a sprain would mean ALL exercise is contraindicated, only the leggy closed-chain stuff.

Also, far be it from me to go against your doctors, but considering the amount of water you state you drink per day, my guess is you are suffering from hyponatremia, which is kind of the Yang to the dehydration Yin. Hyponatremia is what happens when you drink TOO MUCH WATER and flush out too much potassium, sodium and other important trace minerals from the bloodstream. And it can indeed cause dizziness. There's a very good article on the subject in my most recent issue of IDEA Fitness Journal; for you I would suggest Googling with the term "HYPONATREMIA" and see what source information you can get. There's been a great deal of discussion in professional academic journals on exercise physiology and research that indicates the Water Water 24/7 mantra is at best useless and at worst counterproductive, even dangerous.

Just my Point-Oh-Two -

RE: AAARRRRGGHHHH! I'm venting - UPDATE

Lorrie, I didn't even think about what A-Jock said. Yes, you can dilute your bloodstream with too much water causing a low level of sodium. Although rare, it does happen and can cause you symptoms of dizziness, lightheadedness, fatigue, etc.

In that case, an electrolyte replacement drink before, during and after your "sweatfests" would definitely help. Good luck to you & keep us posted on your workout modifications.

RE: AAARRRRGGHHHH! I'm venting - UPDATE

You guys are awesome. Thanks so much - I feel so much better knowing that there may be another explanation and I'm not losing my mind. I actually said to my DH on the way home last night "how can I possibly drink any more?" He was also stymied. I will check out the hyponatremia and learn all I can. I'm starting to feel elements of control coming back. Thank you!

RE: AAARRRRGGHHHH! I'm venting - UPDATE

A-jock, I was thinking the same thing. Too much water equals hyponatremia which can cause dizziness. Since docs gave you fluids Lorrie, hypernatremia (too much sodium in blood stream because of dehydration), may of shown up. That is very strange, since you drink a lot of water. It would be interesting to see if the dizziness subsides with this 3 week rest period. Take care Lorrie. :) :)

p.s. The pool jogging sounds like so much fun.

RE: AAARRRRGGHHHH! I'm venting - UPDATE

I would let the ankle heal for the three weeks that your doctor recommended. My oldest son broke his wrist last year and we thought it was "only a sprain". At that time, I was told that sometimes sprains are worse than fractures and can take longer to heal. If that's true, I think you need to rest your ankle so it can heal properly. Otherwise, you may end up with chronic pain and you'll have to take more time off from working out than the three weeks that you wanted to avoid. JMO!
