Thanks for that. Just this past Sunday I overcame my awkwardness to thank a serviceman in our church. His reply was very humble, he simply said "I'm just doing my job" .

I'm teary too. The young man that I hope will be my son-in-law has been away training. He will be home over Christmas, then leaves for Afghanistan in Feb. He has been told thank you by me many, many times. And I will say it many more times in the next couple weeks. Thanks Bill.

I work on a Marine base, and obviously see hundreds of Marines all the time, marching in the field, flying overhead in helicopters (which is very cool, I gotta say!), guarding the post...

I asked my husband if he thought I was silly to give the Marine guards at the front gate a package of homemade sugar cookies to say "thanks" and Merry Christmas. He said he thought they'd like it a lot, and that I should do it. So I will tomorrow

I'm also ex-Navy and I don't know what I would have done if someone ever said "Thanks". Probably would have stood there stunned...

Thanks being a vet, your post meant a lot to me.

With the holidays just around the bend, my mind drifts to the troops often because I remember what it is like to be away from home during the holidays. It is an ache in your heart that at times is unbearable but your personal pride in country and love of your comrades carries you through...
