A rant about shoes

Okay, so I went shoe shopping at lunch. Where are the nice shoes? Where are the sandals that don't have six inch heels and one teensy strap across the front? I can't wear those for work. In fact, I can't wear them if I actually plan to WALK anywhere. I'm sure they're fine for sitting on a bar stool with one's legs crossed (or not), but WTH? And then there's the beachy looking ones with the ties that lace up your leg. Very professional.

I am mourning the passing of the decent summer sandal for work that isn't either bordering on something a stripper would wear, or looks like I'm about to run off to Ibiza.

And I don't want frumpy. Where's the happy medium?

Go to Zappos.com. They have a million sandals, free shipping and return shipping, reviews by buyers that will warn you if a shoe is uncomfortable. I would be surprised if you couldn't find something there. Love'em, especially when they have free overnight shipping, which they do intermittently.

Unfortunately, I'm in Canada, and so there a few things with that idea. One, I'm not sure they ship here. Two, if they do, I'm sure shipping will be pricey. Three, I have to take into account the exchange rate on the dollar, plus the fact that I will get charged taxes and duty when I receive the shoes. Kinda doesn't make it worth it.

Thanks though.

I guess I'm just feeling whiny.

In addition to what you mentioned Shelly. I am having a hard time finding a shoe that fits in width. I have never worn a narrow but find that a narrow (which are impossible to find in stores) are the only shoes that will fit me now. Are shoes being made wider these days or what?

What shoes go well with barrels? Then I can give you advice.

Can I come visit?? I need some strappy, high, sitting-at-the-bar shoes, and all I can find are beach shoes and old woman shoes!!! I can't find summer work sandals/shoes either, but bar stool sitting shoes are more fun, anyway :)

Wish I could help you, Shell, but I do agree. I've never, even in my youth, been a high-heels kinda gal, and now they're making even casual shoes a minimum of 4". PUH-LEEZ! And I have a hard enough time keeping a slingback on, I can just see me with a shoe that I have to tie up my leg.

Ballet flats are making a comeback, so maybe you can find those somewhere. But sandals? They just don't seem to want to make them comfortable any more.

Do they have Aerosoles in Canada...sometimes they carry cute sandals.

Good luck!

Shelley, I just wanted to share that Zappos does have a "Canadian Connection." Go to the Zappos website and click the little Canadian flag in the upper right corner. I was placing an order this morning and noticed this feature :)

Sorry can't help with the shoes. I just wanted to add I find the same problem these days w/ clothing. It's all made for "the younger set". Having said that I have to add I don't think I'm old. I'm 44. I just don't want to dress like I'm 20! Where is all the stylish apparel?

Well, I'm 43 and a couple of weeks ago, someone came into our office for a meeting on Casual Friday (someone we deal with on a regular basis) and he said "you dress like you're 17". I took that as a compliment ;-)

I found some shoes! I found them at Naturalizer, of all places. Instead of ordering on-line, I'm going to go to the store this weekend and pick them up:)

Actually, I find that clothing is either made for fifteen year olds of fifty years olds which is great, and very stylish but not appropriate for someone my age who wants to wear reasonably stylish clothes that are somewhat age appropriate. I don't care for Plain Jane which seems to be the only option for those of us caught in the middle. Shopping can be tricky at times x(

Hi all,
Two great options for nice shoes, professional too, at a discount. I've been shopping from here for years.

www.gothamcityonline.com.

Their prices have started to creep up on that website directly, so they also have an eBay store where you get get shoes really, really cheap. For instance, I recently bought a pair on Anne Klein slingbacks for $16. I have purchased several pairs of Kenneth Cole for $20 and under...
You just have a search a little bit, but the deals are there, and this seller is reputable!

Two summers ago I bought two pairs of dressy looking sandals from Naturalizer. They are not old lady looking at all and they are very comfortable. I am STILL wearing them. I just looked at their website to see what they carry now. Most are ugly, but there are a couple that look good, calleo, torren? and there was 1 more but I don't remember. I think you can get them in Canada too. naturalizer.com. I hope you find something you like!

Cole Haan has the best sandals! (they are owned by Nike now and all their shoes now have nike air in them!!) There are some great pairs at Nordstrom's right now!!

Your happy medium lies with Dansko sandals. They have a huge range of pretty sandals with 2-3 inch heels that are supremely comfortable. I have about 10 pairs now and wear them all day, every day of Spring and Summer. I can walk miles in them and I walk fast. No blisters, no foot pain, and they are not ugly orthopedic shoes at all. View them on dansko.com and buy from zappos.com where you can read buyers reviews, view the sandals from multiple angles and in close up and enjoy free shipping snd free returns, with next day air shipping upgrades.

I have the Arabella, the Raquel, the Naomi and one other whose name I can't recall.

Give them a whirl.

Also, Born have some pretty sandals with the comfiest foodbeds ever!
