I haven't bought any tapes yet, I'm a little strapped right now but I just wanted to say that I love coming here. You are all so positive and there's no bickering. I belong to one forum and lately there has been absolutely no support. That doesn't benefit anyone. As soon as I get lined out, I plan to start buy my first video. I do have a question though. I am 52 and no stranger to the gym, just burned out I think. I heard....that if you want leaner legs, you should go slow with intensity instead of step classes or higher cardio. Is this true. I don't know if this is on the right board or not but thanks for any advice. I am a classic pear.

Welcome, Mary Ann!

I personally don't know what "morph" I am, but my experience has been that leaning out usually results from a good consistent mix of slow heavy weight training, mid-range endurance-oriented weight training, and high intensity cardio of varying modes (step, hi/lo, kickbox, etc.) You want a good combo of slow-heavy and mid-range leg weight training to build and maintain muscle mass, as well as muscle POWER, and you want a good kick-butt cardio program to keep your heart, lungs and circulatory systems healthy and happy and vibrant as well as to keep your fuel-burning systems on the go.

Welcome aboard! Let us know what your goals and preferences are, and we'll be happy to help you spend your money!

Welcome Mary Ann! This is a great place!!

If you want my opinion, I think you can't decide which part of your body to make leaner. I think you just get leaner, and your body decides which parts are going to benefit :-( In other words, I don't believe you can really change your shape, although you can tone it up very nicely.

Having said that, a lot of people these days believe that more emphasis on strength training is the best way to get leaner. Especially at our age, it is particularly important to preserve the muscle we have by emphasizing muscle toning and strengthening.

I do cardio 2x per week and strength training about 4x per week. This is working well for me and I'm loving it! If you'd like some suggestions for Cathe's strength-training workouts, let me know. I have them all! :D

Yes, I definitely want suggestions. My goal is to lose at least 30 lbs. I am currently 170. I just went to the Drs. yesterday, I gained 20# since Nov. He thinks it may be thyroid. I was exercising consistently but with no results, I started slacking off, making things worse. I do eat clean, I can honestly say that. I slip once in awhile. I am anxious to hear what you suggest. Has anyone bought tapes off ebay? I wondered if it's worth it with the shipping and all.

Hi Mary Ann,

Re: your question about ebay. You have to know what the tape or DVD is worth brand new (factor in shipping) and what you think a reasonable discount should be considering that the item is used. Also, if ordering vhs (although I recommend DVD if you have a player and the financial means) you get a quantity discount when you order from Cathe.

If you have exercise videos already and are willing to part with some, you can always sell/trade them at the YaYa's swapmeet or trade them at the VideoFitness exchange (no sales allowed on their website).

Lastly, I have a used vhs copy of Pure Strength Back, Biceps, and Abs that I'd be willing to send to you. The right side of the cassette was damaged and I did repair it and the tape plays fine. I will tell you that you would need to gentle when removing it from the vcr or it will stick (it's never gotten stuck for me though). Anyway, think it over and email me at [email protected] and let me know if you're interested!

Welcome!

Hi Mary Ann,

I have bought several VHS tapes on Ebay, but like Sabine said, you need to do your homework first by checking out Cathe's prices. I have never been dissatisfied with my Cathe Ebay purchases. I think you will find that most times, the DVD's on Ebay price up to about the same as buying a brand new Cathe. They definitely hold their value.

Like Nancy mentioned, most of us who are around your age find that weight training has made all the difference. As we age, we naturally lose muscle, so it just makes sense to do it. I started a couple of years ago and absolutely love it!

I am a pear and do three days of cardio, with alternating rotations of heavy and endurance type weight work. The key is to mix things up after a time because the body is so good at adapting to whatever we throw at it. I have been extremely pleased with the results!

Welcome!

p.s. You may notice on the threads that we're at our happiest when we've done a workout that causes us pain for a few days. Don't let that worry you. We're really not crazy people.

I agree with this. The prices Cathe DVD's reach on ebay is too close to the price Cathe offers from her site that ebay purchases of her DVD's are not worth it IMHO. I also take into consideration that if the DVD is defective and I bought it from an ebayer, I'm stuck. But Cathe would replace it for me free of charge. So, to my mind, ebay Cathe DVD's is a no go area.

Hi Mary Ann,
Not sure if you remember me - I am your "twin". Haven't bought tapes off ebay but just wanted to say I am glad your MD is checking out your thyroid. If he says you are hypothyroid, getting back to normal doesn't happen overnight. They start with a low dose and build up gradually based on more lab tests. When I first found out, I was relieved that they found something that could be fixed. I thought it would be quick until I wasn't so tired and cold but it was a very slow and frustrating process. Mostly cause the MD felt once my TSH was about mid normal I should be feeling ok. Finally went to an endocrinologist that believed that pts are best at a lower TSH. And now the weight is still a struggle to lose - 8 weeks of WW and down only 5#s. But better than gaining. Good luck. Let me know how things go. Take care.

I am doing WW also. Hopefully I can get some weight off by summer. I'm no spring chicken but I don't want to look like an old hen either:D

As always, A-Jock is dead-on.

I have seen an amazing difference in my own body since finally mixing heavy lifting, mid-range endurance weight training, and high intensity cardio. I believe that is why so many people here see such tremendous results with the Intensity Series. I simply cannot praise that series enough.

Welcome Mary Ann!
