A mental block when it comes to step aerobics??

This might sound crazy, but...

I really do want to learn step, I have Cathe's Basic Step, and have/had every intention of doing it. Here's the weird part, sometimes I can't even bring my foot up on the step, it's as if I don't trust the step to hold my weight, although I know it will, it already has several times.

Each time I try to get fired up to do this workout something won't let me, and I have no answers for it. I know my doctor says I shouldn't go full bore with step aerobics, but she feels I don't need to abstain completely, though.

I dunno, maybe I'm afraid of injury.

I'm open to any suggestions!!!!:(

Jerry,

Do you have the Original Health Club Step? If you do, then maybe try doing it with just the top platform and no risers. I do that occassionally and am just coming back from and injury and did that for a month. It doesn't seem quite so scary when you do that. Just a suggestion. I plan to always do that when I'm doing a workout for the first time. I hurt myself doing iMax2!

Some people start out with a non-slip rug or mat in place of their step until they feel more comfortable with the moves. Then move up to the 4" platform before using any risers. It's a progression, be patient with yourself. No one would suggest a person start out on a Harley when they haven't even tried a 2-wheel bicycle :) .

Great point, Deb, thanks!! I have never been one to shy away from any challenge, and I am always hungry to learn something new. I think I may just do the entire DVD without the step a few times until I become somewhat familiar with the moves, and then slowly build from there. It's not like I have to have this memorized by tomorrow, I have the rest of my life to learn this!
