Is $9.92 plus $7.77 shipping for the High Step with 4 risers and the Cathe All- Step video a good price?? I want to get the High Step with 6 risers. Isn't that what Cathe sells (sold) for $60+? Also, has shipping gone up for SNM?????

A really good awareness exercise would be to take the package to the UPS store and ask how much it would cost you to ship it, remember larger shippers get discounts that you don't. So a lot of that shipping cost is the "handling' at the warehouse. That way the vendor can offer a really "low" price.

I work the USPS and really get a kick out of someone charging $5 to mail me something and then it only has $1.25 in postage on it.

UPS assists the shipper in this effort as the new shipping labels don't include the price.

Some mail order vendors, King Arthur Flour comes to mind, have an honesty in shipping policy they charge the cost of shiiping only.

Jancorrin -- yes Walmart's shipping is 7.77. I do not have an interest in Wal-mart, just thought there prices were really good.

I love Cathe, but I like to search for the best price too. I don't have a high step and I am going to probably buy it from Wal-mart and search around for less expensive riser price or better shipping costs.

Dave-I love King Arthur's flour catalog, I am glad to hear about their shipping policy. I might do some Christmas shopping there.

Regarding shipping - if someone charges more than the actual shipping, it is probably because there are other expenses. I have sold items on eBay, and charge for handling which includes the cost of the shipping materials (bubble envelopes, tape, labels, the stamps for "first class" "media Mail" etc.), delivery confirmation, and the trip to the Post Office. Also, there are fees associated with getting a payment through PAYPAL. I don't mind shipping and handling charges if I know them up front, but when a seller (whether eBay or otherwise) does not disclose the amount in their listing, website or catalogue, then I am weary. I always find it interesting that consumers don't understand the cost of shipping. It is NOT only the actual amount for the item to ship. I really can't afford to "eat" the shipping costs (a lot of vendors cannot either, especially if they have to hire others to package) so I have to pass the costs on to the buyers. If they do not agree to the price, then they don't have to buy. Sorry for the "rampage" but I was really surprised to see the comment about shipping (actual cost vs. "shipping and handling") up here. I have had buyers complain to me about the shipping costs AFTER they won my item on eBay. The time to complain is BEFORE you bid OR just push the back browser button.

My question regarding the High Step is more about the comparable cost with Cathe's High Step, and of course - is the quality the same?? I have never bought through Walmart.com, so I am interested. I have bought through other websites, and have been very happy (LOVE amazon.com). they sell the High step for $55 through Fitness Wholesale. Details:

Features:

step platform measures 16 inches square by 4 inches high
includes 4 risers (each 2 inches) totaling 8 inches
adjust height from 4 inches (platform alone) to 12 inches (with all the risers in use)
includes free Cathe Friedrich Video
maximum weight capacity is 200 pounds

Sounds the same as Walmart's.

Wow, Jancorrin, I got all excited when I saw your post for:

"$9.92 plus $7.77 shipping for the High Step with 4 risers"

It is $49.92! I'm sure you just mistyped. Wow, $9.92 + shipping would have been a steal for the high step! Oh well.

I understand those costs when you're a private seller on an auction website. You're upfront about the cost.

When you move to a fixed price in a catalog or catalog website, that price should include all those costs of doing business as at some point you know what it cost to pack the item for shipping. The only variable is the different zones in shipping costs.

My remark about postage was about a software vendor that charged me $5 to ship a cd. The post office gave them the box for free, they didn't use bubble wrap. The hourly wage of the employee isn't handling, it's the cost of doing business. You cover that in the margin between wholesale cost and sales price. If you're honest.

Walmart doesn't charge me extra when I ask an employee to get something of the top shelf or out of the stockroom, the employees wages are factored into the price of the item.

I guess it is just that some vendors are better at incorporating the prices into the "cost of doing business" than others. Some vendors have employees whose exclusive function is packing and shipping. Some "shipping and handling" costs help pay those employees or cover their expenses.

As far as charging you $5 to ship a CD, if the post office gave him the box, and it wasn't priority mail I'd like to know how to get FREE boxes from the USPS!! I go to three different post offices in my area, and NONE of them will give a box for free - it is even difficult to get decent priority mail boxes! If there is a way to get free boxes from the Post Office, I NEED to know about it!! :)

Business retail establishments WILL include all costs in the price of the item. I thought that we were talking about shipping and handling costs through catalogues, etc. MOST do have a shipping and handling charge over and above the actual cost to ship. It is the cost of doing business, and a consumer has the option of seeking the item from another vendor.

Yes, I made a typing error when I said that the high step was $9.92. I forgot the 4 in front of the first 9! Sorry if I got too many people excited! I still don't know about the High Step from CAthe. From what I saw on the website, you have to order and then wait. Is it worth it????
