LAST EDITED ON Jul-11-01 AT 06:45PM (Est)[p]that 40 pounder we'll be needing soon (if you choose to go with that). I am anticipating the new videos and trying to prepare so I can use them the day they arrive! I was cruising WalMart with hubs on Sunday. They have 40 pound hex dumbs for $11.95 each!!!

Just a heads up to all you other impatient Cathe-ites. If anyone else has seen some good deals, please post either here or Bargain Watch at VF.

I was at my local WalMart the other day and the highest dumbell weights there were 25 pounds. My WalMart is inferior! Or maybe the people around here are just wimpy and nobody would buy 40s! Just kidding... I'll have to keep looking.

alternative idea

LAST EDITED ON Jul-12-01 AT 05:03AM (Est)[p]I've been trying to rack my brain on how to get around buying those 40's. I say "those", because my Walmart stops at 25 too and the Replay Sports store close to me sells DB's in pairs. 40's aren't cheap;-).

So..in all my frugality;-), I've found a way to strap two 20's together. I'm using an ankle cuff that's meant for a cable attachment on my home gym. It's made up of heavy fabric and wide velcrow that covers that. If I wrap and secure it over the two handles when the DB's are placed side by side, it works great. I then use one of the smaller V handles or a short bar to strap onto the D ring that's meant for the cable. Seems to serve the purpose well. It also lets me vary the weight by combining a 20 pounder with a 25..or mix and match any of them.

Anyone reading this who thinks this may not work for you because you don't have the ankle cuff or handles, might want to compare the cuff and the dumbbells. Another option is if you sew, the strap is nothing but a good heavy fabric with extra wide velcrow covering it and allowing a lot of space where the two velcrows come together. (You don't want just a small section where the velcrow hooks together, my area almost wraps and hooks all the way around..you don't want this thing to fall apart;-)).

Obviously, I wouldn't want to use this over any bodypart because it is make shift, but for those leg exercises that the weight just hangs over the floor and away from toes..I think it's going to do the trick. Also, if you think you just don't have the support from a strap and handle...don't do it;-).

In my area there is store called Fitness Warehouse that sells hex dumbbells individually for about 49 cents a pound, all the way up to 75 or something humongous like that :-wow !I get my gloves, barbell plates, and all my dumbbells there.Love that place. Lots of big hunky salesguys to carry your purchase to the car for you too! ;-)

We have a set of dumbbells that are really mini-barbells. One can add weight plates to get to the desired weight. It does seem like the reach around the 10# plate might take getting used to (vs a hex). The set came from a run-of-the-mill sporting goods store.

I feel SOOOOOOOOOOOO stupid! I have a couple of those puppies, and I can make my own 40 pounders! I just keep 8 lbs. on them all the time, and don't even think of changing them!!!!!! Duh! So I HAVE my 40 pounder...I just have to add plates!

Sports Authority & BusyBody

Sports Authority sells the Big Boy (and even Bigger Boys) individually -- I saw it on Monday. I don't remember the price but it was very reasonable. BusyBody Fitness here in Atlanta also has them individually (and heavier ones, too), but they're a little higher.

I picked up the 40-pounder and was just amazed at how huge it seemed -- it even looks massive. So I didn't buy it yet -- just felt instinctively that I'll work up to it a bit longer. And that's so funny because I could handle a 40-lb barbell for lower body.
