A Good Nutrition Book?

Hi, everyone!

I just went on the Amazon.com website to find a good book on sports nutrition, and my head is spinning! There are so many of them!

Is there any nutrition book(s) that any of you have found particularly helpful? I know the basics of nutrition; what I am looking for is a book that will help me put together a good meal plan. I eat mostly healthy foods, but just "play it by ear", so to speak, during the day, and what I would like to do is actually write out (preplan) my meals for a month or so. That way I will better know how I am doing with proteins, carbs, and fats. Secondly, I would like to read a little more about what is best to eat before or after a workout.

If it helps, I focus a little more in the way of heavy weights than cardio.

Thank you for sharing! :)

A few of my favorite books

Denise, I'm not sure how much they'll meet your needs but here are a few of my favorite books. I've found that it takes a few books to get everything I need. Some focus on just nutritional facts while others focus on recipes...but if I mix them all together, they can pretty much cover a lot of info that I'm looking for.

A must have..or it used to be;-)...Nancy Clark's Sports Nutrition Guidebook The subtitle is...eating to fuel your active lifestyle. That pretty much sums it up. She does have a few recipes and great info on what to eat when and getting in the right fuel..but I don't see any real planned meals layed out in the book.

High performance Nutrition by Susan kleiner. This book does have a sample diet written out for 30 days and it's pretty much like Nancy Clarks book on info...however, Nancy's is more of a nutrition for dummies kind of book...more user friendly. But the two together are great.

A brand new cookbook I just found...thanks to a fitness friend:)...Ultafit Cooking by Cindy Whitmarsh at http://www.ultrafitnutrition.com (I think she's also the nutritionist for Tamilee's website???). This is just recipes but pretty healthy ideas for quick meals. She has a workout on the back of each divider as a bonus...6 in all.

Last but not least, one of my all time favorites is a bible on nutrition and eating more towards whole foods...Staying Healthy with Nutrition by Elson Haas. It's a big book and I love how it goes into detail about all the vities and minerals and what they do for you. He has a very natural concept towards eating that I enjoyed reading about as well. This book was recommended by my Naturopathic Doctor. It helped guide me away from bad habits I'd been raised with.

Hope that helps a bit.:)

RE: A few of my favorite books

Nancy, I am reading Eating For Nutrition right now. It's a great book! One of your other suggestions looks so good I am ordering it from Amazon ( Staying Healthy With Nutrition).

I'd like to add:
Eat Smart, Play Hard by Liz Applegate
Eating For Endurance by Ellen Coleman

Have fun reading!

RE: A few of my favorite books

Nancy,

Thanks for the recommendations. I second Nancy Clarke's book, I check that one out at least twice a year from the library. And you know I have High Performance Nutrition at home and have probably cracked it open once in all the years that I've had it! Guess I better give that one a second glance. :)

I plan to look into that third book plus the ones suggested by kweller (?).

I've read most of these & they're all good recommendations.

Liz Applegate's book is the most user friendly. It's fairly new so her discussion of supplements is up-to-date w/ the latest fads. She does offer eating plans for different types of activities or goals e.g. yoga, strength building, riding a century.

Clark's has lots of recipes & is one of my favorites.

Ellen Coleman's is truly geared toward endurance sports (90+ minutes). She has a new book which seems to be geared for academic use as it's pretty dry. But the supplement info is the most current.

If anyone is looking for basic info in a nutshell, Liz Applegate's monthly article in the January 2003 Runners World is great. Tackles carb phobia, gives a daily eating plan (a template) that is broad enough for personal preferences, etc.

Thank You!

Thank you all so much for your recommendations! I put a lot of faith in your opinions.

Wow, Nancy--thank you for going into so much detail! Even the presentation of your reply was impressive. :) I appreciate the time you took to do that. I agree with you that one book usually cannot cover all the information needed, and I'll probably get more than one. I really like the idea of the sample meal plans, so that one really appeals to me.

Thanks again for your help--you are a great group!

RE: Oooohhh..

And he might be bringing me the Haas book you suggested!
