800 situps?

Boybert

Cathlete
I saw this on Aug rotation week 3, Monday. Honestly, are 800 situps really necessary if you are working your core properly? Do we do that many in coremax segments? I just always thought if you work hard on form & really focus hard on the muscles, there is no need to do excessive numbers like this. Does this make sense or does everybody generally do this many in one shot? Maybe I don't count when doing Cathe's segments, so it sounds like a lot to me.

My mom used to do 1000 situps as part of her routine, and to this day (she's 58 now) has a rock hard 6 pack!

She no longer does 1000 situps as part of her routine, but I really think her abs are so awesome still because she used to do this all the time.

oh okay. Maybe the number just sounds like a lot b/c I don't think about it when doing these segments LOL! No wonder I'm getting definition :)

Debbie,

I don't know if you have any of the P90X workouts, but in one of the workouts called Ab Ripper X, you do the equivalent of about 300+ situps which is about a 15 minute long workout. (Tony Horton says the exact number, I think, but I can't remember).

Gosh! 800 is pretty serious, isn't it? Not sure that I will make that many on that day! This is one of the other reasons that I know that I need exercise videos, is because I will lose track and daydream, like Cathe is always reminding us about!

I'm a "quality over quantity" kind of girl, and that many of one thing just sounds kind of excessive. Just MHO.

Do you really think that coremax is close to that number? I've done the whole thing once and will attempt it today,so I will be counting! That is scary!!!

Why should we do situps at all? I thought they targeted the hip flexors too much and took some of the work away from the abs. Has anyone else heard this?

I don't know but it sure worked for my mom. All she ever did for abs were those 1000 situps. She still has abs that look just like Cathe's.

Stay with that thought Gayle. You don't need all of that time investment to be extremely fit. Then there's the injury factor.....

Actually, I did a "200 crunchs a day" challenge a while back, and each Core Max segment ends up being close to that. So think all 3 Core Max segments plus one.

Personally, I prefer quality over quantity, and I'd add weight to crunches instead of doing so many.

Hi Dani, Does your mom do full situps or crunches like cathe? Just curious.

Thanks

Terri

By the way you are adorable in the roadtrip pics.

My football players do about 800 - 1000 sit ups, they need super abs, because they are always getting ran into. As well as the coaches tests them by making lay side by side and trying to walk across their abs, as each player tightens them. The coach is a little over 200 pounds. So think of it this way, after you do those 800, you at least don't have a big guy trying to step on you. ;-)

But a lot if times we do quick burn which is a high number of reps done quickly, and slow burn, which is weighted reps done at a slower pace and not so many.

There are benifits to doing them both way, quick burn does help with muscle endurance, gets your heart rate up, so your actually burning a bit of fat, and can break plateaus. Slow burn, increases strength, you get your heart rate up a little but not as much as quick burn, and it builds more muscle. Fast burn doesn't generally build much muscle done too fast, but it does push the endurance level.

So it's up to you, 800 isn't all that bad, but you got to be in shape for it. You could also break it up if you need to. I've done them right long with the football players, of course we have to do more as their is a girl able to compete with them, usually by 1015, they give up, and say good enough, and usually very happy as if they hit 1020, I'm probably going to be toast. But it's an awesome feeling to really get those abs burning like that and keep them burning until you hit 800 or 1000.

I see 400 sit ups on day 1 of the third week...I don't see 800 sit ups(whew:p )! You had me nervous. NOW, 400 doesn't sound so bad...tee hee!:7

Tell you what, do 3 sets of 50 hanging knee ups with perfect form and the results will be the same. Assuming a clean diet, of course. Situps and crunches rate behind the hanging knee ups in terms of stimulating the abs.

nice on ice: If you don't have the equipment for hanging knee ups, then what?

What is your typical exercise regime?

You know what is weird? Your original message when I reply says 3 sets of 50 instead of 3 sets of 30. But when I click back to your original statement it says 3 sets of 30. Strange.

I also have to say, I have the arm slings to do knee ups, straight leg or bent knee (this is not a captain's chair, btw, you are hanging with your arms in slings from a bar, but I have done them on a captain's chair at the gym) and 30 is a lot of reps. They are extremely challenging and even the fitness competitors in M&F and other sources don't confess to doing that many.

I was in a hurry and double typed the 3 so I edited it.
Those slings you described can mimic the chair.
Yes it is quite challenging and hard to cheat with whereas I find situps and crunches to be easy to cheat on when I get tired.
