My football players do about 800 - 1000 sit ups, they need super abs, because they are always getting ran into. As well as the coaches tests them by making lay side by side and trying to walk across their abs, as each player tightens them. The coach is a little over 200 pounds. So think of it this way, after you do those 800, you at least don't have a big guy trying to step on you. ;-)
But a lot if times we do quick burn which is a high number of reps done quickly, and slow burn, which is weighted reps done at a slower pace and not so many.
There are benifits to doing them both way, quick burn does help with muscle endurance, gets your heart rate up, so your actually burning a bit of fat, and can break plateaus. Slow burn, increases strength, you get your heart rate up a little but not as much as quick burn, and it builds more muscle. Fast burn doesn't generally build much muscle done too fast, but it does push the endurance level.
So it's up to you, 800 isn't all that bad, but you got to be in shape for it. You could also break it up if you need to. I've done them right long with the football players, of course we have to do more as their is a girl able to compete with them, usually by 1015, they give up, and say good enough, and usually very happy as if they hit 1020, I'm probably going to be toast. But it's an awesome feeling to really get those abs burning like that and keep them burning until you hit 800 or 1000.
