7yr old killed by pit bull

A 7 yr old boy was killed by a pit bull in Mpls yesterday. The male dog was the family pet along with a female and 5 puppies. He was chained to a pole in the basement and had two previous bites on record with the city. The father of the boy tried to intervene and was bitten as well. The father then shot the dog to death. There are 3 other young children in this home.

Young children in a home with a vicious dog and guns? This is just so sad but it also makes me really angry. They interviewed neighbors who said there is a pit bull in every other house in this neighborhood because having a perceived mean strong dog is a status symbol. WTH! Now there is a state rep that wants to make it illegal to own certain breeds. Whatever happened to responsibility of the pet owner to properly socialize, train, and humanely treat their pets?! I used to have a german shepherd who was the sweetest dog but I would have people ask me why I would have a dog that is often misunderstood to be dangerous especially since I had young children at the time. People can be so ignorant.

Anyway, sorry to rant but this story really upset me. It was such a tragedy. I know there are a lot of dog lovers here and some pit bull owners who have very sweet dogs. Again, it comes down to being a responsible owner. I just hate seeing the dog always taking the blame.

Sounds like there is probably a lot to this story - dog chained to a pole, history of biting, owner with obviously no control of dog... It's so sad and will just add more fuel to the "anti-pit bull fire" even though it sounds like owner irresponsibility to me. :(

I feel so badly for both the kid and the dog. Two innocents, both dead, because of dumb adults. I don't get the whole - "prove my manhood via my dog and my gun" thing. You can't prove your a man all by yourself? sorry to hear that. Some people's priorities are just so messed up. It is sad.
 
This is a sad story and the owners of the dog should be locked up ASAP. The reason why I say this is because the dog has already bitten, two times. In NYC the dog would have been destroyed. Just chaining a dog to a pole indicates lack of control and can cause a dog to turn on it's owner. Shame.

I agree, but unfortunately most of our laws are necessary because people act so damn irresponsibly. A true case of the few ruining things for the majority.
 
Along with all the other problems you mention what about chaining the dog in the basement. What kind of life is that? Horrible. The whole thing is horrid! Poor child, poor dog......
 
Such a law fails to address the root of the problem, that morons should not be allowed to reproduce yet they do so in far larger numbers than the general populace.

but "young children in a home with stupid, ignorant, irresponsible people with a dog and guns." I love politicians who make this a problem about dogs rather than their owners. All dogs have the potential to be vicious or loving depending on how they are raised. I have two rottweiller mixes who are responsible for a lot of vicious licking and cuddling. I've seen labs, which are supposed to be so family friendly, who will take off your hand. We can't start labeling dogs as bad breeds vs good breeds. It makes me sad.

Hence one of my favorite sayings "The biggest problem with the gene pool is that there aren't any lifeguards!"
 
Everyone is entitled to their opinion....I have a member of my family that had a pit bull for years. They are serious animal lovers. That dog was another family member. One day for no reason whatsoever it attacked a visiting friend of their dd. She (the girl) was about 10 at the time. Kids were not messing with the dog or anything. They had it put down.
 
I'm sorry to hear about your friend's child. However, no dog ever attacks for no reason. With that said, we may not always understand the reason. The child may have looked at the dog in what the dog perceived to be a threatening manner, it could even have been that the child smelled threatening or made a sudden move or sound that startled the dog. Dogs, like people, become accustomed to their enviornment. A dog that is totally "normal" could get very agitated if there is say, a party going on with lots of noise and activity. You unfortunately just can't always tell. I feel badly again, for both the child that was hurt and the dog, for being itself.
 
There is a bad pit bull owner in my neighborhood. I changed my route to the local park when I walk my two dogs because it started a fight with my dogs twice. My dogs are the sweetest dogs but they will defend themselves if attacked. The first time in lunged at my two dogs it ran across the street at them and was hit by a van! The owner came out and swore at the dog (they do not keep it on a leash) and said he was sorry to me. You think having his dog hit by a car and almost attack two other dogs would make him learn to keep it on a leash but no. The second time it came after my dogs there was no van and it started a fight with them. When the owner got across the street he pulled the dog off of my dogs and started beating it and swearing at it. x( What is wrong with people? That dog is going to end up getting put down because it has a stupid owner.
 
This story is so tragic and senseless. I agree with most of the posters that it was a case of pet owner irresponsibility but I also think that some breeds of dogs were bred for vicious purposes such as attacking, gaurding and protecting therefore try as we might we may never actually be able to to take the fight out of the dog so to speak. I am also glad to see that people didn't start jumping on the whole gun issue. I feel that guns and kids can be a very dangerous issue but if they are taught about guns and how to handle them that will only make them more prepared. My father, brother and fiance are all very avid hunters and each of them own at least three guns each. Just as with dog owners there are also bad gun owners and I know that my father will teach my children how to safely handle guns.
I guess I am saying all this because so many people are agianst guns and like I said before there are good gun owners and bad ones. I have even thought about getting my own gun and getting my concealed carry. But we will see, maybe when I am not so broke.

Temperament and personality are passed along in dog genes just like in humans. It's not always the owners fault, like in the case quoted. It is, though in the original post.

I agree with you Jeanine this is why it is so important to adopt a pet for a good breeder or even from a human society (they check the dog's temperment). If you buy a dog from someone's back yard you really never know what you are getting.
