My twin girls are in 1st grade and hubby and I have been debating on Homeschooling it use to be that they would not get the socialization they need, however, I can get my kids involved in enough to not worry about that. How did you start out? Where would I begin? I thought about trying it for 2nd grade. The thing I worry about is I don't want to limit what they can learn I am terrible at math I may have one that wants geometry or trig or higher what would I do? You can email me at [email protected] with any advice or pointers or direction.

Thank you for any replies in advance.

Beth - both of my sister's homeschool their children (one has 4 and the other has 6, but does have 2 of those that now go to a regular school). I will pass your e-mail on to my first sister (Terri) and see if we can get you some advice. :) I can tell you that her children as EXTREEMLY bright and very social. Her oldest is smarter than me and I'm a college grad. ;) My husband was always very skeptical about home schooling, but even he admits that all of my nieces and nephews have done very well. There are all members of the YMCA too and do have gym classes and other special activities with other kids. Terri will hopefully have more to tell you, but just wanted to add my 2 cents. :)

Thank You Liann

Hi Beth--

I've been homeschooling for 8 years and my children are thriving. There is a lot of curricula out there and a lot of support and so many things to get your kids involved in that you'll find you can't even do a small fraction of them.

And--you only have to take one year at a time. Don't worry about higher level math right now. There are co ops, where parents with different skills and abilities pool together to teach what they know. For example, one mom or dad may have a degree in physics and another knows Latin and another loves art. They get their kids together and each teaches a different subject. Also, a lot of courses are on DVD now and I have found that helpful with Latin, which our oldest is studying, not having a strong Latin background myself. Finally, in some states, homeschooled kids can take selected courses at public school and I know several that take community college classes while still in high school. There are a lot of options.

Your state probably has a statewide homeschool organization which could hook you up with a good local support group. There you could find a lot of experienced homeschoolers who could help you with the finer point of getting started.

I'll be glad to send you some more information when I get a longer break today. I just snuck down to check our Netflix queue and snuck a peak at the forums:eek: :) . I have to get back to work.

Maggie:)

Hi, Beth

Here's a link to a very popular homeschooling magazine. It covers various approaches to homeschooling. Usually focusing on one educational approach per issue. http://www.thehomeschoolmagazine.com/ You can also pick up a copy from most any bookstore, like Barnes and Noble.

This website will tell you about homeschooling in your state and about homeschool groups in your state, www.hslda.org

Books by Ruth Beechick have been very helpful to me through the years. She sometimes writes articles in the magazine listed above also.

If I can be of further help, let me know.:)
