$54 mil for a lost pair of pants?

This may all be, but I think it comes down to common sense, if I have the coffee in my hand, I kind of figure (and can feel) that it's hot, because if it causes skin grafts on her private parts, I am pretty sure, it's hot while holding the cup.

I think in that case (and many cases of that sort) it comes down to personal responsibility. DON"T PUT COFFEE (especially hot coffee) BETWEEN YOUR LEGS, if she got burned because the coffee spills - it's her fault, not the coffee's or McD's.

I just don't get it!

The guy with the $ 54 Mio damages, he should be disbarred! I guess those pants were made of pure gold studded with diamonds! Hey, maybe I should sue him for personal distress, because I get upset and my blood pressure goes up, just reading about it! }(

Eyeyeye, where is it going to stop!!???

Carola,

Actually, it's still not that straigth forward. McDonalds uses (or used to use. I don't if they still use them anymore as I never drink coffee) polystyrene or foam cups which are actally cool to the touch. It does not tell you the temperature of the liquid inside. The cup keeps the liquid at high temperature for a long time and the unsuspecting user can sometimes burn themselves when they drink it.

I do remember the case a little because it happened to a lot of people, but only one ever sued. I think children were scalded too. The case did mean that McDonalds changed the way they make coffee and cups, which is no bad thing.

The unsuspecting user?? With all due respect, it is straight forward! Coffee is boiled water, it is HOT!!

For crying out loud, when are people starting to take responsibility for their own actions again and not blame everyone else??

Marie! You are too funny! :7

For me the difference between the McDonald's suit & this one is McDonald's is a huge, billion dollar corporation. I'm not gonna comment on the legitimacy of the coffee lawsuit, but other than the PR issue McD's didn't much suffer from the damages. These poor people could lose their business & apparently their right to be in this country. It's really sad.

Laura, where did you read that? If they are in this country with a legitimate visa, they can't be "deported" over a civil lawsuit, it would be a different story though if criminal charges would have been pressed against them.

Carola

I'm sure they're not being deported, they probably can no longer afford to live here (legal debts, their business is gone, probably foreclosed on their house, etc). They probably have family elsewhere and are moving in with them. Of course I'm only guessing here...

I read in news story (ABC I think) that they've become disenchanted with living in the US and are considering moving back to Korea, voluntarily.
