4-Day Split Kickbox Cardio

I picked up 4DS from eBay a couple weeks ago. What I really wanted was the step workouts. Pricey step workouts, but that's how much I love Cathe's step! ;)

Even though step was why I bought the series, I decided I would do the 4DS rotation and started Saturday night with HIS.

Yesterday I did KBX. On my rotation, I replaced all but the first KBX cardio with jog sessions as I'm also training for another 5K on New Year's Day. I left the KBX cardio in yesterday just to take a look.

I don't like kick boxing. Well, I don't like KickMax. I have tried KM twice and pulled my hamstring(s) both times because I'm not very good or safe at kick boxing. KM is now at the back of the shelf, just sitting there.

I took all the suggestions of the good folks here and decided to keep everything very, very low and controlled.

I eased into the workout slowly. I kept my kicks low. I'm talking 6-8 inches off the ground for the front and back kicks. I was able to go higher (safely!) on the side kicks, but still kept them low and controlled and watched my form very closely.

Result? I actually liked this workout!! And I didn't pull anything! :7 I didn't get everything. The punching combo had me pretty well confused. I knew what to do, I just couldn't do it as fast as Cathe. ;) And the jacks between kicks confused me. But overall, I enjoyed the cardio. I loved the last few minutes of standing core work. Loads of fun.

Now I'm a little sad I replaced this cardio with runs for the next 3 weeks. But I have to get my runs in somewhere, so I'll have to wait until January to try this again or switch up which cardio workouts I replace with jogging.

I also enjoyed the weight work (those low plane lunges are killer! }(), but I didn't expect to dislike the weight work, so not as big of a shock there.

Hi April,

That's great that you were able to modify the workout and still get results! Maybe you should dust off your Kick Max in January and give it another try, too!

Posts like this are exactly the reason I want to teach a foundational kickbox class when I get my CPR certification. Kickboxing can be a wonderful workout, but at the same time if you're not careful injuries can happen.

The best workouts I have ever gotten with kickboxing are the ones where I really concentrated on form, and didn't worry that I was lagging behind the instructor on TV. Kickbox is such an effective workout, you don't have to be fast to reap the benefits of it. If speed were required, I would never pop another tape in.

It may be harder for me to find a place to teach because I have no interest in teaching at a fast pace, but I won't compromise just to have a place to teach.

I would suggest giving KM another try, but this time, focus on form, you may surprise yourself.

Thanks, Jerry. I hope you help lots of people with their form. :)

I look forward to doing 4DS Kickbox again when I get out of my rotation. I'll probably pull out KM again at some point, but as you can imagine, there is a big dread factor associated with KM now!

I'm thrilled I like the 4DS kickbox workout, though. I did try an entry level kickbox routine from another instructor, but didn't like the instructor, so sent it back. If Cathe did a beginner routine, I might try it, but I like Cathe for HARD stuff, so I'd rather she did another awesome totally step workout! ;)
