2 really GROSS questions

Forgive my candor, and if you are easily grossed out, please don't read any further.

So out of nowhere I got SOCKED with this nasty GI bug 2 days ago. Totally has me down for the count, and I HATE to be sick. But my mind does all sorts of strange things when I'm sick. I have 2 sickness ?s for anyone (BeckyMD ?) in the know -

1. When your stomach rejects food and comes out from either of our two ends, does your body absorb any of the macro or micronutrients? (Eg fat, carbs, vitamins, etc.)

2. Does soy milk curdle in your stomach the way cow's milk does (even when you're not sick.) Just curious - I really need to get over this thing!

If your body is rejecting food from both ends, it doesn't have time to absorb much.

I had an aweful bug like this a couple years ago. At one point, I was wondering if I'd ever be able to keep food down again! I was thrilled when I could add some saltine crackers (which I usually don't eat) to my broth diet!

I wouldn't suggest any kind of milk (soy or dairy) at this time.

Stick with the BRATS diet, which is recommended for intestinal problems like this, because it's made up of foods that are usually more well tolerated: Bananas, Rice, Apple sauce, Toast. WIth maybe some veggie broth (which can be full of nutrients if homemade, and is easier on the stomach).

If you are unable to keep anything down or in....it is very important to get some electrolites. Like Pedialite for kids, but you can get the adult version. You need to keep hydrated as well as restore electrolites.

When my kids were sick, they were to drink one tablespoon of water or pedialite every 15 minutes. If they could hold it down, increase every few hours. I really hope you are better fast. Melissa

No, stuff doesn't curdle in your tummy, we digest...but with a GI flu, you are best to NOT eat for 24 hours, just take fluids, from water to gingerale to gatorade (pedialite) -etc......and start back slowly...most of all, do not "push through" being sick and force yourself to exercise when sick -your body needs rest..

Just a side note, you all will likely understand, when I get those bugs, where its amazing you can feel SO bad and NOT die, I always think, in a warped cell in my brain,"well, maybe I'll lose a couple pounds!" and I never do!!!!

"It's amazing you can feel SO bad and NOT die"

That's really funny, I have the same thoughts when I'm sick like that.

Hey, has anyone tried to make themselves throw up when they feel so horrible?? I have tried, but it never seems to work. I keep thinking I will feel so much better if I do, but no such luck.

LOL - Alison that is SOOOO funny! I'm recovering now so I can laugh about it more, but you're so right. It's like you're lying there, and you KNOW you're going to. And you think "come on - you'll feel better afterwards" - so gross but true. For some reason I tend to think of food - usually oatmeal raisin cookies - and that does it. It's such a waste of time and energy to be sick. Thanks for the input everyone. Sorry for threading such a yucky topic.

Sorry it took me so long to reply. Life is crazy right now and I just found this thread.

I agree with what has been said already.

You probably aren't absorbing much. The only thing actually absorbed in the stomach (that I can think of now) is alcohol. Most of the rest is absorbed in the proximal small intestine. So, if you are flushing it out quickly, it probably isn't getting absorbed. Do drink some Gatorade for electrolytes.

I have no idea about curdling, but I don't think it does that. :)

Becky:

Have you heard of recommendation to eat fat foods when recovering from a stomach flu? Like butter on crackers? So it coats your stomach? Just wondering what the modern thought is on that. When my boys and I had the rota virus a number of years ago, the senior pediatrician and one of his young pediatricians got into WWIII over this topic across the counter from me... And I needed to go throw up already!!!

Hi all -

After reading this thread Thursday, I got hit with "the bug" on Friday. I was in Raleigh for work and had to fly home to Atlanta that afternoon -- Sick several times all the way home. Think "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" - that was me!

I've taken it easy today -- just lethargic with a slight headache. I hear a lot of people have had this lately (or do you always hear that when you're sick!?)

Anyway, it does make you appreciate feeling well...A secret for anyone who deals with this in the future: Save yourself by eating ice cubes, a subtle way of getting something in your belly!

Take care,
Caroline

I have never heard about eating fast food when sick.

They do still preach chicken soup, crackers, and 7-up/sprite. :)
