1st laser hair treatment done

Just got home from my 1st laser treatment!

It went very well. Very professional. I was nervous at first, then finally felt comfortable.

I had my period! So that really made me nervous. But, the tech. made me feel at ease. And it didn't bother her. I took a few motrin before hand (was worried about the pain then the added sensitvity the period adds). Well - I don't think it helped. To be quite honest - it hurt ! I thought I had a high pain tolerance. I think having my period made me alot more sensitive. So, she lowered the laser power. Then I could still feel it - but not quite as bad. She explained that you do want to feel it - about a 5 or 6 out of 10 pain. They do ice the area before the laser and after the laser.

The whole procedure - bikini and underarms took about 20 min. Plus, she was explaining things to me.

THe bikini areas wasn't as uncomfortable as I thought. She was very professional. I am getting the brazilian done too! So- little is left for her to see! But, it was done very professional.

Right now - about 1 1/2 hour after; don't feel that bad, a little soreness, like razor burn or a sunburn.

Her directions following the procedure - working out 24 hours (no sweating), no shower 24hrs, no creams or deord. to those areas for 24-48 hours, no sex (because of the bikini area), no pool for 24 - 48 hours.

My next appoint. is in 10 weeks. She said I should see a "shedding" period occur in about 6 weeks. She said after each treatment (4-6) the laser power goes up, but, you get used to it. After the 3rd I should really notice a huge difference! YA!!!! Can't wait!!

Well - That's my story for today! I'll keep you posted as I go thru this!!

Glad it went well for you. As the hairs fall out, the subsequent treatments are a little easier to tolerate, but they still sting. You will love not having to shave, so it is worth it in my opinion.

Each time will be easier as the amount of hair reduces. You will love the outcome. Very, very smooth.

I'm not positive of the differneces. I'm going thru American Laser Centers. www.laserhairremoval.com
They give tons of info.

Can't wait to be smooth and hairless:)

wellness, I checked out the website and some of the clinics near me and there's no doctor involved. While I can imagine that people can learn the technique without being dermatologists, I would at least want there to be a dermatologist in the office overseeing the procedures. Did you go to a doctor's office or somewhere else?

Nancy...this is one of the things I am 'struggling' with right now. There is a great facility right near me(Northern NJ) that is only staffed by doctors. However, I've had several friends go to day spas in NYC and they have had great results. I sort of feel better going to a doctor, but I don't actually know anyone who has gone to this place. I'm interested in what Wellness has to say about her experience.

Hi Nancy & Pippa,

The facility I choose, American Laser Center - in Buffalo, NY is 'owned' (I think franchised) by 2 doctors (physcians). It is a technician that does the laser treatment, but the doctors are available. (I don't think it is true for all ALC-). This is one reason why I picked this one. Just made me feel a little more at ease, esp. if for some unforseen reason a problem occurred. I actually live in Rochester, NY, only about a 50 min. drive to Buffalo.

Rochester actually just opened an ALC in Feb., but, I couldn't get much info about it at the time I was trying to decide, and the one in Buf. has been opened much longer (I figured more experience) and it was owned by doctors and the price was competitive (sp?).

I did research a few other places - more spa type places; but just didn't feel as comfortable as I did when I did the consultation at the Buffalo ALC. A few places I called, before I made my decision, wanted a $150 consultation fee! This place was more of a spa - but they asked very specific questions on the phone, and I believe were going to call my doctor too. But, I ended up cancelling the app't. Too much $$ I thought for a consultation. I did look into a few dermat.places, they were more expensive. It might vary from city to city too.

The technician that did mine - seemed very knowledgeable. She was trained very well and very explicit before and during the procedure. She did do a follow-up call also.

My suggestion would be - get a few different consultations. Research them out, ask ?'s, and go with who you feel most comfortable with.

The thing I did notice that set ALC apart from alot of other places, is that you can come back for up to 2 years after you have completed all your treatments. IT's nice to have the guarantee, that if you aren't satisfied, or hair is coming back, you can go back at no extra charge.

I hope this helps you out. I can only base it off my experience so far. (Still have 2 - 3 more treatments left).
But, that is how I came to my decision, and my experiences in researching different places.

the "shedding" stage :eek:

One thing more : I really have heard only good things from those who have done it already :)
