10 smartest dog breeds

Unbelievable! They don't have Australian Shepherds on that list either:eek: Someone didn't do their homework there!!!

After having a border collie mix, and seeing the "real things" in action, I'll have to agree with the number one dog. I was so impressed with them that I wrote paper on a border collie trial that I attended for my non-fiction writing class in college. Hopefully, this list won't cause people to go out and start adopting them the way they did when "Babe" came out. Smart they are, but they want to WORK, and if they aren't kept busy, they will find something to do that might not be as productive as herding.

Black & white angels, they are!

Hmph. My Boston would make an excellent rescue dog (provided the person that needed rescuing had a chicken leg in his pocket).

In addition, I can say with great certainty that I am well protected from any menacing bunnies and squirrels in the area. :p

My furry babies made it to the list but I really wish they would explain their needs better to the public. My two GSDs are extremely intelligent, busy and energetic creatures. I really hate when I see them in the shelter. They are NOT for the casual pet owner. We play with them for 2 hours daily just to calm them down. :) They get very bored very quick. I have to be creative when it comes to play time. You cannot just leave them with a rawhide and a Kong and expect them to be calm and relaxed when you return. :)

Hmmmm.....

Not sure of this. My beloved dearly departed Spyro was a cattle dog mix and he had a head full of sawdust. Not the brightest dog ever.

However, Vlad is a ShepWeiler and he is very smart. too much for his own good, sometimes.

Hmph. I wonder how they quantify "dog intelligence"? I'm not sure smarts always automatically come along with all individuals within a breed, and I'm pretty sure that ALL dogs are smarter than ALL humans, since they get to stay at home all day and WE have to have jobs.

Oh, and if there WERE differences in intelligence among breeds, everyone knows that miniature Schnauzers would be the smartest.

So there.:p

smart dogs

Hi,

My dobies made it to #5, and that's what I love about the breed. I'm suprised that the Aussies didn't make the list. I have to admit though, my Aussie is trainable, but he may not necessarily be smart. There is a difference.

:D:D I love the chicken leg in the pocket statement!!!!

i have a chocolate lab and a yellow lab. and i always say that when g-d made Django (my chocolate) there was so much love put in there wasn't room for brains.

lol. I guess there are always exceptions to the rule. I grew up with a lab/german shepard mix and she was so smart she was practically human lol.
We did have a pure bred german shepard but parted with her on a big military move to a breeder and she wasn't as sharp.

WTH? My pug Lilly should have made that list! She can find cheese from a week ago in my son's bed! She can sniff out crumbs anywhere. She totally knows when we are heading out to the van for a ride and makes sure she blocks the door for her chance to come. When it is too cold she knows to stay home from a walk and also when the snow is too deep! She can sandwich herself in the bed between me and DH and get to stay there all NIGHT because she is so cute. She totally should have made that list because there are about 100 other adorable things she can do! LMAO!

LOL, Nan, I was just thinking this about my Golden Retriever! My gf and I joke about our Goldens because, while they are sweet and loving and loyal and aim to please, they are the dumbest dogs we have ever had! I can't train her to do anything beyond sit and shake. But my pit/dobie mix - BRILLIANT dog! She can be trained to do anything.

OMG, your Snoopy is just too darn adorable!!!
My yard is safe from turtles, squirrels, bunnies, blowing leaves(yes, we do get false alarms about blowing leaves). Oh, and moles. Maximus is trying his best to dig one up:eek:

Here is my patrol squad:
Notice the boxer spit on window. That's from the alarm system. Nothings perfect:D

Same w/my puggle, provided you replace the chicken leg w/a piece of poo.

I have to say, in my own experience, of my four dogs the two mutts were the smartest. My very first dog was a golden retriever & I think it's true that they're sweet & goofy, but maybe not the smartest dogs ever. My puggle is the best dog in the world--she has the affection of a pug & the smarts of a beagle. Sometimes she outsmarts me. :)

Cute boxers Cynthia. My DH wants a boxer. Right now we have an Italian Greyhound. He may be the sweetest dog ever but Einstein he is not. :D
