1 lb. weight increments

Why can't they make weights in 1 lb. increments. I have 8 and 10 lb. weights and the 8s are too easy and my form suffers when I use the 10 UGH!! I have thought about just doing less reps with the 10 and eventually I will be able to work up to doing all the reps. Just needed to vent!

One option is plate mates. They're 1.25 lbs each, and hold on to the ends of your dumbbells by magnets. I'm guessing this probably doesn't work if your dumbbells are covered in neoprene or vinyl, but they work great on hexes.

They're sold at fwonline.com, and I got mine at a local home fitness equipment store called "Fitness Warehouse." I've never seen them anywhere else.

Yet another option is just to keep both 8's and 10's handy, start with 10's, and switch to 8's when they get to be too much.

What I do with the one pound wrist weights is hold them in my hand next to the handle of the barbell, slipping my thumb through them. I make lots of 1 lb increments this way. And you can add 2 lbs to a barbell by slipping them onto its bar-ends. This is good when adding 5 lbs to the barbell is too much.

Hi Beth,

They DO sell dumbbells in 1# increments! :)

Go to www.fitness1st.com and you'll find dumbbells in 1# increments from 1#-10#, but they stop at 10#. Last time I checked (1st of the year), you could only buy those type in colors, they didn't come in the metal/hexagon shape, only the rounded end shape, and each #1-10 was a different color, and you can purchase them separately.

I use the adjustable ankle weights on my wrist when I need more weight but can't go up to the next weight. Right now, I'm using this system to get a 12.5# weight and a 17.5# weight for certain exercises.

If you're using a barbell, you can buy 1.25# plates which literally are no bigger than a donut! I use these to ease up the weight or to test and see if I can really move the weight up. I bought mine locally, but I do know that some online places carry them - I just can't remember which.

Since my house is small, and I have had a few tough workouts today schlepping things to the Goodwill store, my advice to anyone who hates junk is: go for the tens in the beginning of the set and switch to eights during. This will only last a few workouts and you'll save yourself having more "stuff." :)

Hey..

You know too.. I saw a post by Francine here about using weights for CK, and I purchased some "weighted hands" at Title9 Boxing on the internet. They are two pounds each but are also available in 1 pound and they go on like gloves. This might work, and you would have them for CK. They were only 9.99!! You might want to get the one pounders though, as I am wondering whether the two pounders will be safe for the quick punching in CK....

Don't get the one pound increment dumbells. If you stick with Cathe, you will quickly outgrow those. Whatever you do, get something to add to your poundages. Like even now, I do squats with 20lb. dumbells, but I don't want to automatically go up to 25lbs, which, when the poundages get heavier, they only come in 5 lb. increments. So I will either get the PLATEMATES or use my weighted hands for the added resistance. I was going to get the platemates, but now that I think about it...well, I'll probably just get both. They also make weighted gloves on that same website, which, again, now that I think about it, would probably be better for weight training. I LOVE my gloves.
