Brazilian Blowout warning

I seen on the Wen thread a couple people have had this treatment. I just wanted to post this in case you didn't know.

Please be careful with the Brazilian Blowout. There was something on the news about it the other day that said it is very hazardous to your health. One salon near me refuses to do it because it is so dangerous. Apparently, formaldehyde is used and when it is released in the air it is very dangerous for anyone around it. So please be careful. Ask your salonist if the products they use for this treatment has formaldehyde in it. If it does, run for the hills!

A Brazilian Blowout is a chemical treatment that is suppose to make frizzy/curly hair smooth. There are multiple types.

Brazilian Blowout is a specific brand. Thermal Reconditioning is another term used for the process. Some have formaldehyde and others done. Always use an experienced stylist if you chose to do this because there can be a risk of damage to the hair due to the high heat involved. As for the formaldehyde, The Brazilian Blowout recently release the following statement. Brazilian Blowout
Not sure it makes me feel better. There is a less expensive version called Keratin Express which is available at a lot of salons and suppose to give the same results, but for a shorter period of time. Garnier has an over the counter product called Sleek and Shine Blow Out Perfector.

I personally tried the Keratin Express and it did not work for my hair. Left it frizzier than before. My daughter just tried the Garnier Sleek and Shine and it stripped her color and left her hair dull, dry and very unmanageable. So I would definitely approach these products with caution. I'm sure they work on a lot of people, and hopefully my daughter and I are the just the exception. I wish I could find one that actually worked on me. I'm tired of my frizzy mop head.

This is the brand I get in my hair:

It is unbelivable how smooth my hair is. My hair is shoulder length, thick and frizzy. With this treatment, I blowdry for less than 10 minutes.

I can't say enough good things about it!

My hair is incredibly fuzzy and curly and colored - this summer in PA has been horrible on it. I have been using the 'no poo' method of cleaning my hair and using generic Argon oil and it has been behaving a bit better. One of my friends at work did get a brazilian blowout and she said not only is the smell horrible ('cause its formaldehyde), but you also can't wash your hair for 48 hours. And her hair didn't really stay that straight for very long.

Been dying to try Wen products and enjoyed the thread about it. Think I'll have to give it a try!

I remember being told once by one of my hair dressers (this was years ago and I just recently started taking her advice) - to stop making your hair do what it isn't suppose to do. Simply put, if your hair is straight, find a good style you like and go with it - straight. Same with if your hair is curly. Find a style, products, whatever you need to make your hair look good and healthy because the more you try to make your hair what it wasn't meant to do, the more damage you will cause.

So I stopped fighting trying to make my hair straight. All the straighteners and heat irons just made it dry, frizzy and brittle. I now only use good conditioner on my hair with a product to scrunch it and I just let it dry. I can't believe how good my hair looks now and how healthy it is. I never even blow dry it anymore unless time calls for it.

I think that was the best advice ever given to me.

Debbie, I was told the same thing abut 15 years ago. I had this long, curly hair that I was forever trying to straighten. I finally gave up and went curly. I cut long layers into my hair, found a good styling product and went the scrunch and dry route myself. I do use a hairdryer with a diffuser though. My hair is so thick it would take all day to dry if I didn't help it along.

But I completely agree with what you've said. Just go with its natural tendencies ....your hair will thank you!
