Who knew we were feeding our kids drugs?

Okay - I sort of understand the FDA's reasoning, but seriously, they could not have done this a different way?

Tue May 12, 10:05 pm ET WASHINGTON (AFP) – Popular US breakfast cereal Cheerios is a drug, at least if the claims made on the label by its manufacturer General Mills are anything to go by, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has said.
"Based on claims made on your product's label, we have determined that your Cheerios Toasted Whole Grain Oat Cereal is promoted for conditions that cause it to be a drug," the FDA said in a letter to General Mills which was posted on the federal agency's website Tuesday.
Cheerios labels claim that eating the cereal can help lower bad cholesterol, a risk factor for coronary heart disease, by four percent in six weeks.
Citing a clinical study, the product labels also claim that eating two servings a day of Cheerios helps to reduce bad cholesterol when eaten as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, the FDA letter says.
Those claims indicate that Cheerios -- said by General Mills to be the best-selling cereal in the United States -- is intended to be used to lower cholesterol and prevent, lessen or treat the disease hypercholesterolemia, and to treat and prevent coronary heart disease.
"Because of these intended uses, the product is a drug," the FDA concluded in its letter.
Not only that, but Cheerios is a new drug because it has not been "recognized as safe and effective for use in preventing or treating hypercholesterolemia or coronary heart disease," the FDA said.
That means General Mills may not legally market Cheerios unless it applies for approval as a new drug or changes the way it labels the small, doughnut-shaped cereal, the FDA said.
General Mills defended the claims on Cheerios packaging, saying in a statement that Cheerios' soluble fiber heart health claim has been FDA-approved for 12 years, and that its "lower your cholesterol four percent in six weeks" message has been featured on the box for more than two years.
The FDA's quibble is not about whether Cheerios cereal is good for you but over "how the Cheerios cholesterol-lowering information is presented on the Cheerios package and website," said General Mills.
"We look forward to discussing this with FDA and to reaching a resolution."
Meanwhile, the FDA warned in its letter that if General Mills fails to "correct the violations" on its labels, boxes of Cheerios could disappear from supermarket and wholesaler shelves around the United States and the company could face legal action.
According to General Mills, one in eight boxes of cereal sold in the United States is a box of Cheerios. The cereal debuted on the US market in 1941.

I saw this on the news last night. Apparently the FDA has nothing better to do. I swear the Cheerios box has said that forever.

Nan

Absolutely ludicrous. I'd be willing to bet that the punishment for not changing the packaging will result in heavy fines by the day. Administrative government is the worst.

And to boot, is the FDA insinuating that the public isn't intelligent enough to understand that it's a cereal and NOT a drug? That we might be confused if they don't change their claims? Do we really need that spelled out for us?!?

I'm disgusted.

geesh can't stop anything else bad in our food, bad supplements allowing to be on the market etc but you want to get up in arms over a claim on a box. the damn commercial says PART of a low fat diet not the end all be all of getting healthy DUH? even my plants could figure that one out.

Why don't they go after the People Marketing "HEALTHY" Juices, Cereals, Sodas to our Kids daily. Better yet, feed our Children Nutritional meals at school, no soda and give them more time for P.E. and Recess! I am so disgusted with the waste of time they spent on Cheerios.

Now there is an FDA cause I could get behind. And not just time - BUDGET! Many schools here in CA have gotten rid of PE because there is no budget for a PE teacher. It's ridiculous that we expect our kids to be in class sitting on their butts on day long with no break for real physical activites.

i would be happy if they do away with some of the foods we make at our school. fries seriously?! they justify it with "well we bake not fry them" fake as hell potato buds for mashed potatoes with butter buds(powdered butter essentially). BREADED chicken sandwiches, hot dogs etc. i bet if only healthy options were offered these wouldn't steal b/c HEALTHY FOOD FILLS YOU UP BETTER!!! a lot of kids steal b/c they are hungry and cannot afford to buy more food. you would think we can offer at least TWO healthy meals(we serve breakfast too) to some of these under privileged kids.

why doesn't the FDA get on the USDA's and our schools butt about what food they send us too cook.

I saw the Cheerios story on the news last night ... as I was feeding my 7 month old Cheerios. I just laughed. How dumb.
Note to FDA: Most Cheerio afficionados are under the age of 5.

(Cheerios afterall is just a gateway drug, which leads to the ever destructive Honey Nut Cheerios and Yogurt covered Cheerios. *gasp*)

How about the "LUNCH" French toaster sticks,Sausage Patty and hash browns for lunch (ALOT OF KIDS ARE ALREADY HAVING THAT FOR BREAKFAST- Not my child) or Fried cheese sticks. Sometimes are Kids get two desserts. UUGHHH

Ugggh! It just makes me furious!!!

Why doesn't the FDA do some productive stuff like checking on the clinical trials that are run and that are manipulated. And then those drugs come on the market killing people or at the very least causing serious side effects while the FDA is looking the other way.

But the FDA only checks up on 1 % of all clinical trials. I guess they are so busy chasing the real dangerous offenders like Cheerios

I totally agree about the "healthy" school lunches, it's pathetic what they serve kids at school. I just don't think it's the FDA that is in charge of that? Are they? Who the heck comes up with those school lunch menues anyway? And on top of it have the audacity to claim the lunches are healthy. Corn dogs, pizza, chicken nuggets and canned veggies and fruit....... are healthy? Give me a flippin' break!!

I think am going to start and raise a big stink at our local school board about the school lunches! I am tired of just sitting back and letting things happen.

not sure who runs it but i know who runs the money and they order through USDA programs a lot. my god this year they told me to push COOKIES!! WTH!!! why would i push a kid to spend money on cookies when i could push them to buy a banana or an apple.

oh don't me started on the nasty cooked vegetables that the cook over salts for "taste". i only eat salad at work b/c i make it and i know where it comes from and i bring in some leftover chicken or something from home. we offer fresh options but just not enough and usually limited to certain days. its ridiculous b/c they worry about money in these parts. the ppl here just basically don't know how to do their job or they know how to do it all to well and get a kickback.

now go to my dh's job at the college and he prepares at LEAST 3 different fresh steamed veggies with no salt or butter added and huge salad bar with seafood or chicken for protien, deli bar with lean turkey or ham(granted maybe a little more salted) but with fresh cut veggies for toppings with whole grain options from bread to wraps. a vegetarian station with brown rice and veggies OMG i could go on for days how well this private college provides their kids with options. even a flavored water station with several flavors and TEAS(my fav to stop in for).

BTW to stay on the OP's topic yes my dh's job also serves cheerios! honey nut and multi grain along with the original. :p

IMO, the FDA needs to disappear completely. This is a group that's here to regulate for "safe" drugs to the country. This is the same group that has approved (and recalled) Vioxx, approved (and recalled) Phen Phen... just to name a few.

I mean seriously, what's the point? They've proved that that have no more intelligence or information that the general public in making decisions for what's healthy.
Thanks, but I'll take my chances.

This is ridiculous. And aren't there oatmeal commercials that say the same thing about lowering cholesterol if you eat it regularly?

Wow, I feel bad for the company. They will be paying some hefty fines for this and probably have to relabel everything.
