Runners and the Garmin 405

Hello All. Does anyone own this? I have the older heavier bulkier model 305 and of course a few months later they come out with the sleeker version. I'm thinking of getting it but just wanted to know opinions, . . love it hate it? I love my 305 but it's like running with a 1lb dumbell straped to my wrist, . .I'm petite with little wrists. I appreciate any feed back.
Oh and Happy Holidays everyone!

I'm a speed walker, not a runner, but I have one of the more compact Garmin models. I really like mine. It's pretty much like wearing a big wrist watch.

Thanks ladies. I love my 305 but my husband sorta took over that one and because of the size and since it actually fits him better I didn't really mind. I went ahead and got it. I had a $50 coupon to amazon and saved another $50 by redeeming some points. This website sorta convinced me.

It seems easy to use and since it is sleeker and not as bulky I can wear it as a regular watch too.
To anyone thinking of buying it. If you run a lot I feel it is well worth the investment. I love trail running too and I love being able to acurately measure my distances. My 305 has really motivated me to run harder, faster, and longer and running has done wonders for my overal strength, endurance and weight loss. I am now sticking to running, Cathe, and crossfit and I'm stronger now than ever. Now if only I could get my hands on STS I'll be a happy camper!

Ooh, very nice! I like it. I like it a lot. Have the 305 and don't plan to upgrade until this one bites the dust. At least I hope I can hold out! The 405 is much sleeker, isn't it? And I love the fact that it can be used with indoor workouts.

Wow, that thing is...awesome! DH and I have contemplated taking the plunge and purchasing one.

Do you know if there are different settings per user? For example, can DH and I both use it and access our own settings/pace,etc?

Heidi

I got the 305 at the point that I got injured, so have not used it much. It is big though, but the cost was really good at Amazon. Now that I am better, it is too icey to run outside.

I too bought the 305 on sale at Costco, and then the 405 came out a few weeks later ;). I think I will stick to my 305 for now since I heard some complaints about the touch bevel (instead of the buttons on the 305, the 405 has a touch-sensitive rim around the watch that replace the buttons). Knowing that I'll likely touch the bevel unintentionally a lot during my run, I'll probably be one of those people who keeps getting annoyed if things go weird on my screen LOL.

I do so love the sleekness of the 405 (not to mention the color--I LOVE that green!), but I love my 305 and don't mind the size TOO MUCH, so I'll stick to it till the 405 goes on clearance someday ;).

You can use it indoors but you have to buy an additional foot pod thing for around $80-I do love that I can use it indoors. Can't wait to get mine. Should be here in a week. I'll let you know what I think.

Hi Heidi, both my husband and I use it with different settings (this is the 305) it can store a ton of different runs and it is kinda nice to see the progress over time. I think I read that the new 405 allows you somehow to challenge others and share times but they have to have their own.

Yeah, I've read that the bevel bugs a lot of people but I'm not one that likes to putz around with my watch when I'm actually running so I'm crossing my fingers and hoping it won't be a problem. With my luck this 405 will be an additional $100 off right after the new year when I get mine in the mail. :)

I just got the 305 from my in-laws for Christmas. Complete shock. I didn't ask for one, but I'm very excited to have one. I have no idea how I will use it. I usually run the same 4 mile trek each time. Maybe I'll go find some trails. Any suggestions welcome.

Sancho: you just watch--within a few runs, you'll be so addicted to it that you won't be able to run without it anymore! Two weeks ago, I was out on the trail and I accidentally turned it on when I was still indoors so it didn't pick up the satellite feed--after about a mile, I looked down and to my horror, discovered it hadn't been picking up ANYTHING I was doing. I seriously had to stop and reset the thing before I continued with my run.

I mean, run without it working? Surely you jest!

Please let me know what you think. Mine should be here first week of the new year. It has been uber super cold here in CA. and with the kids out of school I haven't been able to go out for an out door run for a while. I'm curious to know what you think. By the way, . . how cool are your in laws!!
Oh and just curious any one else out there run in the rain? I just got a pair of winter running tights and a hoodie but have not been brave enough to run in the cold. I love running in the rain but not the cold.

I'd rather run in the cold than in the rain--I'm such a wimp about the rain LOL! I did my first ever 10-miler in pouring rain and it was not fun, so I guess I've been traumatized ;).

How do you warm up before???? The cold just cuts through me like a knife! I love running in a rain drizzle especially trail running. It keeps me cool but not freezing. Man you are super woman! Do you run with a cell phone when you do the longer runs? Just thought I'd ask.

I live in Chicago area. Can you give me some idea how I can use it in such cold winter? Should I save money for a good elliptical machine?

Thanks

I was looking at the 405 also. I've read that some people who like to look at the data DURING the run don't like the 405 as much as the 305, because it is harder to read the smaller display while you're moving. (i.e.checking splits at regular intervals during a longer run to see if you need to speed up to make a goal time). If you mainly only need the data at the end of the run, I don't think it matters that much, and the smaller size would be nice from a comfort point of view. I still haven't decided myself.

Hi Janie,

You are very sweet--I hardly feel like a super woman ;). I guess I should clarify that I don't exactly enjoy running in the cold either; I just hate it less than running in the rain LOL!

I don't do much to warm up, other than "dynamic stretching," which our coaches taught us. Because static stretching while muscles are cold could lead to injury, they want us to "move through" stretches, if that makes sense. For example, instead of doing a static calf stretch, we do a downward dog, in which we press down one heel at a time, switching up every 10 seconds so we're not holding the stretch too long. Another one we do to warm up our hips and legs are leg swings: first forward and backward (with the legs straight, but knees aren't locked), and then side to side. We look like the Rockettes ;). Then we do hamstring stretch to hip flexor stretch in a sort of walking lunge motion. Not sure if I'm explaining that correctly, but first you do a hip flexor stretch, then sit back into a hamstring stretch, then you move forward and do the same thing on the other leg. You do that 5 times on each side. And we start everything off with rotating from side to side (our arms swing freely as we do this) to get the upper body warm.

As for the actual running in the cold, I've learned it's about what you're wearing. While you're waiting to start, you'll want to bundle up--you do NOT want to chill. I usually have a ski jacket on, as well as gloves (I have microfiber ones I can run with), a hat (which I keep on when I run), and ear muffs to cover my ears. I wear tights, which are fabulous (CW-X insulator tights). Right before I start, I take off the jacket, and I try to dress in thin layers that I can peel off as I get warmer--thin layers are best, 'cause they'll be easier to tie around your waist as you peel them off. The rule of thumb is to dress as though the temperature is about 20 degrees warmer than it is, because once you start running, the body heat you generate will be about 20 degrees, and if you're dressed too warmly, you'll overheat.

I usually wear a long sleeve base layer (needs to be wicking, so the sweat is drawn away from you) and a dry weave t-shirt on top. I like to be warmer than most people, so I also wear a thin half-zip pullover (again, wicking :)). I don't mind wearing things around my waist, so I usually end up taking that layer off later on--but not until about 4 to 5 miles in. I also wear those microfiber gloves and my hat, and sometimes I keep the ear muffs on, although that tends to make my ears too warm once I get well into the run. I usually keep them on out of sheer laziness LOL. My legs are usually ok because I'm wearing tights, but other than that, I try not to wear too much because I do get warm as I get into the run.

Hope that helps!!

PS Yup, I never run without my cell phone--I'm too paranoid about leaving it behind LOL! I also always have my license, a credit card, my insurance card, my AAA card, and $10--you never know if you need these things in an emergency, and I always wear either a hydration belt so I'm able to bring all of these things without them taking up too much room.

Jennifer yes, . . that totally helps me a lot. I don't know, . .no promises but I think I'll give it a try tomorrow morning. What kind of hydra belt do you wear? I always worry about it bouncing. Can you reccomend one? I love my CXW tights too but didn't realize that they make winter versions. I just may have to look that up too.
Oh, . . by the way yeah, . . you're totally a super woman!!
