Yoga Suggestions

I am interested in adding Yoga to my rotations. Can somebody recommend a good tape and how many times to include it in a rotation per week? I have been exercising for about 2 years (primarily Cathe and the Firm), have approximately 5-10 lbs to lose and would like to tighten up and lean out a little more (that is not to say that these are my expectations when adding Yoga, just wanted to give a little history of me). Thanks in advance for any recommendations or advice!!!

Karen Voight has a nice tape called yoga sculpt. It is power yoa and stretching. This is a nice break from heavy weight training once in a while.

Well it really depends on what kind of yoga you want to do. If you want to do power/ashtanga yoga you might try Bryan Kest or Baron Baptiste. There are also other great ones like David Swenson(the best supposedly), Sarah Powers, Eoin Finn(not sure I spelled that right) and Mark Blanchard to name just a few. You should check out the reviews at videofitness.com.

I do power yoga 3 times a week for about 6 weeks or so, then I switch back to doing weights 2 or 3 times a week. Of course I also do 3-5 days of cardio with those. I find that I like rotating them like this because I don't get bored.

Some people do both. They do weights and power yoga/or other less strenuous yoga in the same rotation. That is fine. It just depends on what you like and what your specific goals are.

Maybe someone else can recommend a place where you can research the different kinds of yoga, so you can decide.

Hope this helps!

Hi,
I started yoga by doing a Yoga Journal tape for beginners with Patricia Walden. It's good for starters to show you how to do the moves. Not too fast or difficult.

Then I moved up to other tapes. There are different tapes for different times. You can do yoga after a workout to really stretch. In this case, say after a run or spin class where your legs get tight, I do an easier tape that really stretches you. I like Rodney Yee's tapes and a tape called Total Yoga (at Target).

For days when I do yoga alone, or after an easier workout, I have Karen Voight's yoga tape. It'll work your muscles more. I also have Yoga Fusion tapes, which are great. They also work your muscles and include some toning. I'm not advanced yet, so sometimes I can't get through the tougher tapes when my legs are already tight.

So decide how you want to incorporate yoga- would you prefer to do it alone on a day of rest or easy exercise just to really stretch? Or after a workout to get an extra stretch? I only do yoga 1-2x's a week. Rodney Yee's tapes are just 20mins each, which fit in easily.
