first of all -is there a big difference between the 2?I was also wondering what is the difference between power yoga and yoga? What are some good yoga instructors and tapes?thanks!

From what I understand, Pilates focuses more on core strengthening, using the limbs as leverage for this purpose, whereas yoga (in its million variations) focuses more on total body range of motion plus muscle endurance, as well as a certain "spiritual" or mental focus. I'm a near-complete neophyte when it comes to either of these two disciplines, so I may be totally off. There's a surge now to fuse yoga and Pilates, in fact: I think there are classes in "yogalates" and "Pi-Yo", so I think the disciplines are pretty complementary.

I've read that the Stott series of Pilates workouts is very highly regarded, and Rodney Yee and Bryan (Brian?) Kest are also highly regarded yoga instructor-vid-producers. I'm sure there are many, many others in each discipline. Try the Living Arts website (www.livingarts.com) and you'll get a good start on the vid/DVD offerings.

Hi Smiley2!

I would swear by Power Yoga! I'm not into the meditative aspect of yoga, but doing yoga twice a week has given me so much more endurance and strength for my weight workouts. After really sticking with it for 6 months I can see a definite improvement in flexibilty and stamina. I like Bryan Kest, Baron Baptiste and Beryl Bender Birch.
Power Yoga is a lot more demanding than traditional yoga. HTH :7

Sherry-is bryan kest only for advanced? i have denise austins pilates right now and honestly she drives me nuts so i hardly ever do it.i would be doing it for flexibility too not the meditation part of it.

Bryan Kest has a series he did in 95, I think that is more advanced than his recent series. The first vid of his series in 95 is the least advanced. I don't have it, but I think it sets up the poses for you. In his new series, I have Brian Kest's Original Power Yoga and I'd say it's pretty doable.
BTW, I know what you mean about Denise Austin's voice! Bryan Kest is pretty chatty too, but he isn't irritating like Denise. I also just bought a DVD called American Power Yoga and I think it is really good. Kinda goofy name, but I really liked the instructor. The website for that is www.americanpoweryoga.com. He was having a presale for $15.95 for the DVD. :)
