Yoga mats

Hi all...I'm in the market for a yoga mat. Or exercise mat....so would a yoga mat do, or is one with padding better? Is there a good brand? Good place to purchase it from? I just want to get a nice useful one. I will not need a carrying bag or anything.

I had purchased one of the thicker ones about a year ago, and I hate it. It's almost too thick. I makes if harder and I find it's slippery esp. when you are sweating. I went back to the thinner kind that Cathe uses and I used in the past. I'll just buy 2 or more so I can double them up if needed. I find the thinner I do not slide at all. I buy mine at my local Walmart store for about $15, I'm sure Target carries them too if you don't have a Walmart.

I bought my yoga mat on Amazon. It's a great mat, I paid a little more, but I love it. Take a look at Amazon, see what you think, they have all different kinds of mats.

I have 2 mats: 1 is my cheaper version, made by Wai Lana, bought at Marshalls for about $20 a few years back. The second is the crown prince of yoga mats made by Manduka. I paid about $80 for it at Dicks Sporting goods. I chose this one because, back when I only had a tile floor to workout on, it gave me excellent dense-cell coverage to help me prevent injury when doing plyo and HiT moves on the floor. It has many uses therefore: both wonderful for yoga (no slipping, dense cushioning and padding, no pain to joints) and it subs real well as cushioned flooring for floor cardio.

I now have puzzle mats on the entire workout floor area so I no longer need the Manduka mat for cushioning during cardio. However, I cannot do stretching or yoga on my puzzle mats as I slip continuously. I never slip on my Manduka. If you can afford it, get the best. It will last a lifetime. Had mine 2 years, it remains impeccable.

I bought some a few years ago from Cathe.com and love them. The last few weeks I tried to order not once but twice Cathe's lime green one from Amazon.com and both times the mats were dirty/black. I love Cathe's mats. I don't think the too thin, unfortunately she doesn't have the lime green one anymore. I went to TJMax and bought some yoga mats for around $10. Love them! The name of the mat is Zenergy ™ Lite . I bought a purple and a grey one!!

I second what Clare said. Manduka is the über-mat. Whether it's worth it to put down the big bucks on a mat depends on what you're using it for.

Another fan of Manduka mats here. Mine is more than 15 years old (bought it at a yoga show in the late '90s) and I use it for yoga at home. It's still in excellent condition. Really great investment.

I have been doing yoga for 15 years, have tried many mats. I do not like my manduka mat, too slippery for me. I love my "jade" mat but it was to thin, so now I put my jade mat on top of the manduka and get the thickness I need without slipping. Jade makes a thicker mat but I refuse to spend more money on a mat, if you are interested it is called the Jade fusion. Barefoot yoga has a 25% off sale but it ends tonight.
