Yikes. Sprained Ankle

Tallchick

This is why I ask the kids to please put their shoes away. Anyway, I have not sprained my ankle for years. I sprained both of them, not at the same time, when I went out with my college drinking buddies. I didn't realize it until the next day when my ankle was crying along with my head. Gee whiz, I didn't realize how much it hurts! It seems like a mild sprain, just a little swollen. I worked out gingerly with a very low step, no lunges and careful plies. Anyone else sprain their ankle and somthing else and try to keep it going? Pls tell me how you managed to get in some aerobics. Seems I have to do some arm stuff more. I never was good at arm moving, always tended to slap myself in the face.

I haven't sprained my ankle, but just before Christmas I ripped something in my calf. I was doing Step Blast and there was an audible "ri-i-i-i-i-i-ip" and a great deal of pain. I took it easy for a day, and then started back workout out very gingerly. Did step with no step, or just the bench and no risers. Kickbox took the longest to get back to normal. Boy, did I ever miss those jump kicks!

I think you should probably give anything with impact a rest for a few days. Maybe concentrate on weights and upper body?

good idea. You know how it is when you get into something you just don't want to stop but I think I will upper and abs. Thanks!

I sprained mine pretty badly about 10 years ago (playing softball in the rain at an IT conference). Mine was bad enough that I was given crutches and advised to stay completely off it for at least 3 days. I think it was at least a month before I could do anything like step aerobics.

My advice would be to have a doctor check it out. It would be a shame to try to push it too hard and impede its healing.

This is probably not what you want to hear, but you really need to give that lower body and aerobics a break. Ice it, ten minutes at a time, and make sure it is supported at all times (ie wear sneakers in your house when cleaning up, etc.) specially where you are swollen, you need rest, ice and elevation.

I kow what it is like when you hurt yourself and want to keep going, but the worst thing you can do is further stress an injury. A week or so won't kill you and then you can start trying to get back to it.

Good luck,
Christine

I sprained my ankle a few years ago, and I really thought that I was going to go crazy!!!

I rode my mountian bike outside, and I rode my spinning bike inside until I was able to get back to running and aerobics again, several weeks later. I was not able to even ride my bike for at least a week after the sprain...I feel for you sister!!!

:) ;-) :D :p :9 :7 :+

I am the Queen of sprained ankles, and have had about 10 of them in my life.

One week, two max of rest should see that ankle to rights.

Start by dumping a bandage in cold water, wring it out and bandage up that ankle. Every couple of hours, soak the bandage again and re-wrap. We have always done this in our family, with great results, because no-one can stand the cold of the ice pack on the ankle for very long. The cold bandage will ease the swelling and bring out the bruising.

In a couple of days, a warm bath should help your foot feel better and then you should notice that you can start to put more weight on it.

At no time should you need crutches to walk, just don't put full body weight on the damaged foot for a few days. If you cannot bear any weight on the foot at all and the pain is excrutiating, then you need x-rays to check for extensive damage.

Do not work out on this ankle or do lower body training until it is healed.

Content yourself with upper body and ab training or you will extend the healing time unnecessarily and make yourself even more frustrated.

Enjoy this time of rest to watch lots of excellent movies and read tons of fab books, safe in the knowledge that when you come back to aerobics again, you will have so much energy stored up, things will be dynamic! You have permission to be a full slob for a week! Enjoy it!!!

I sprained mine last week! It swelled up the the size of a lemon on one side, was considerably puffy on the other, and has turned every shade possible since. My husband got me a heavy duty ankle brace which won't let my ankle wobble at all-- I rode the bike for a few days, PUB, CoreMax. . . and am going to try IMAX 3 again in a few minutes! I used ice until the swelling went down, then switched to a heating pad-- that really helped to work out the stiffness. Also, the brace is a lifesaver:) I might start using it all the time.

Hope your ankle gets better soon!

Wow I am surprised that there are so many other chronic-sprainers out there and I'm not alone! I have sprained both multiple times, and count myself lucky that it has been a little over a YEAR now since I had one. They bite, and as someone else said, I know you don't want to hear this, but it IS best to stay off of it as much as possible for as long as possible. The reason I have had so many re-sprains is that I didn't let them heal long enough and they are now forever susceptible to sprains more often.

I had crutches the last few times, for about 4 weeks. You can still do floor work for lower body and normal upper body and ab work. But I would definitely lay off the cardio for awhile. Sorry!
