Yesterday's Oprah

The theme of yesterday's show was "don't spend another summer fat". Oprah is such a wonderful role model and advocate for the human race, and she can be so incredibly funny sometimes. But I digress...

Someone asked her how she got her abs looking so nice (can you believe someone's asking OPRAH that? I'm so proud of her.) She said that she does 300 sit-ups every day. Not necessarily all in the same session, but still. Don't you think that's a little excessive?

I thought that more than 3X a week was a waste of time and energy.

Oprah = Excessive! She probably does it. Did you read her journal when Bob Greene's Making the Connection came out about a bijillion years ago?

I heard the sit up part too but I didn't hear that she did it every day. She does look really wonderful.

I thought that her snack ideas were great. I am a sugar free fudgesicle girl myself.

Hi Donna! I do Ab Ripper X from P90X series. Tony Horton does 25 reps of 10 or 11 different exercises (I can't remember b/c I'm NOT enjoying myself LOL). Its all done in 15 min. but by the time your finished, you've completed 350 reps. Whoa! Do that 3x a week & believe you me you've got strong abs. I still think Tony Horton's is much harder to do than any of Cathe's ab exercise routines (except for those V pikes on the stability ball) LOL When you've got a really strong core center, everything else you do in life becomes much easier. So I don't feel that this excessive at all. Kathy:D

Big difference though between 300 every day and 350 *3 per week. Still seems a waste of efort and ecessive to me. And I agree, Oprah = excessive.

I heard her talk about doing the exercises to and I don't think she said she did them every single day. I can't see any trainer recommending that she do 300 sit-ups every day. Tony Horton from P90X does do about 325 and it's done in 15 minutes so I agree with the earlier response it doesn't take very long and you will get a strong core. They also mentioned that Oprah does not have a tendency to accumulate fat in that area, so she's already starting out with a good chance of having some nice looking abs as long as she puts some work into it.

Well, if it's working for her, why is it excessive?

Some people can get a way with working abs 3X per week and some people can't.

Yeah, I don't think that's excessive. Especially if it's 3times a week. I know Cathe mentioned she really zeroed in on her abs with this last series. I suppose it's all in what you want and everybody knows if your abs look good, it helps everything else to look good.

I watched most of the show yesterday. Oprah impressed me because it sounds like she has learned a lot about fitness and nutrition and also about what works for her body. I admire her for coming as far as she has.

I think what I loved the most was when she said when she wakes up and just doesn't want to work out she tells herself just to get up out of bed and at the very least walk. Don't put high expectations on every workout. The other day I just didn't want to get out of bed because I couldn't bear the thought of a grueling workout. But I realized if I just did a little it would be better than nothing. And just like she said, once you get up get dressed get to the gym (or wherever you workout) you feel a lot better. So the other day, I was dragging but I made myself get up thinking about what she said and I dragged my butt to the gym for some cardio. Once I started walking everything kicked in and I was up and running, literally, in no time!
If you climb enough hills you will make it to a mountaintop eventually, LOL.

"Well, if it's working for her, why is it excessive?"

EXACTLY! Working abs everyday is not excessive -- especially if there are no weights involved. And I AM a trainer and find nothing wrong with doing endurance-based strength work (if those muscles aren't sore) often.

Essentially people need to take what the scientific community gives them and tailor their programs to their own needs. Find what works for you. Try everything. See how your body responds. In general, the fitness community suggests taking at least 1 day per week as "rest". For the longest time I was hung up on that idea and would do nothing for 1 day a week. Well, it made me feel like crap and often ended up becoming 2 days, or 3 days, or a whole week. For ME, "rest" days have become "lighter" days...but I don't take the day off. For some people, a day off is great. For me it is not. Don't let what works for someone else dictate what works for you. Try it out and see.

Sorry I missed the show. Sounds like it was a good one! I too like to work abs everyday. I also hardly ever take a rest day but then again I am obsessed with working out! SEE workout OCD post :)
