Xmas Food

Our house is usually the "gathering place" at Xmas but I'm sick of serving the same old thing which is usually something out of the crockpot, like bbq beef, potato soup, etc. We dont have a formal sit down meal at our house b/c it's just too chaotic. I'd like something nice to have out all day so people can munch, but just not "snacky food", something so people feel they at least had a "real meal". We have some picky eaters too which never helps! (ie, most dont like ham, some dont like spicy so chili is usually out) Any fresh ideas would be appreciated!

Thanks!!

Hi Stacy,
A couple of questions:
are you looking for a 'one pot' dish?
how non-spicy does it have to be?

On boxing day, I have a full house - and they'll all be in and out and at differing times, I've decided to do a North African lamb tagine - it's not spicy (no chilli), but it does have spices in - cumin etc. I'll be serving a red onion and pomegranite relish / salad with it (so it'll look festive) and then making a huge couscous pilaf (which doubles up as the main for the vegetarians and carbs for everyone). As a concession to the children (!) there will be flat breads and humous etc. I'll make some little bits and bobs as well.

PS - I'll make it ahead and freeze it - it's better like that

You could go Italian.....make some ziti ahead of time and just warm it up, bread, salad, meatballs, sausage etc. Viola! Pasta and bread always fills people up! I do a brunch at my house, so it's a lot of eggs (quiche, egg casserole), baked french toast, fruit etc.

I'm going to Justine's house to eat!!!

I second the Italian idea. It's a good one. We normally do more of a sit down Christmas dinner. Loads of ideas for that one, but not so much a casual all-day thing.

I know you said you don't want snacky things all day, but you could do a nice cocktail party type food. With fancy pants snacky things. That may not be a bad idea. Then you truly can have something for everyone. Spicy and not. Veggie and not. But that might get pricey.

Justine as good as that sounds to me, my family would probably only eat the "kid food", ie the bread and turn their noses up at everything. I swear I'm feeding a bunch of 2 year olds!!

The Italian is an idea, but I'm afraid it might dry out in the crockpot (??) I'd like something I can keep in the crockpot and not mess with it too much! Some years I'm just ready to open up red and green tortilla chips and a can of salsa, a bag of "festive" Oreos and say "Enjoy!" ;)

I make lasagna in the slow cooker. It's really yummy and, with enough sauce, does not dry out. I use the no boil noodles so it's pretty easy. Add some garlic bread and a salad.

Tamales with just about any filing you want, beef, chicken, cheese, beans, so delicious. At our house we make tamales, posole, menudo, carne asada...getting excited already!
