Good morning to you! Can you tell us a little about your fitness level and about what type of exercise you have done before. Are you new to step workouts? Do you currently do any type of cardio exercise, ie: walking, running, step or hi/lo aerobics?

You sound like you are ready to start your journey. Hope we can be helpful to you! :)

Exercise is wonderful and WILL help, but you MUST take control of your eating, and Weight Watchers may be your answer. They can teach you how to eat to lose weight AND keep it off. You must commit to re-tooling you way of thinking about food. You don't have to starve and give up everything you like, you just need to be re-educated.
Just Do It! :)

You also need to realize and accept the idea that your problem cannot be solved overnight. Make small, doable changes in your life and look for small and steady weight loss, 1 or 2 lbs/week. You can do this.

RE: X-posted 229 pds, what to do to lose weight.Help ple...

First of all trying to lose 30 pounds by Christmas is unrealistic and unhealthy. If you want the weight to be gone forever, you must lose slowly.

I HAVE been that heavy and it is an absolute nightmare.

I highly recommend joining some kind of structured program. I joined WW and do it completely online. It costs only about $15.00 per month, and honestly, I save that much money per month because I am not longer eating a pound of chocolate a day. You need to learn how to structure your eating and WW does an excellent job of teaching healthy eating habits.

It is not easy and you have to completely change your relationship with food in order to maintain a loss, but you can do it.

Hi Goal160-
My stepson lost 110 lbs. by changing his "All-American" diet to a more reasonable one. He completely stopped drinking sugary beverages and eating fast food. He started eating more steamed veggies and broiled fish, which he loves. Water is now his favorite beverage. He bought a bicycle and started riding, and that's really all it took. His high blood pressure and high cholesterol went away, and he's now a normal, healthy guy.

Well, add a hundred pounds to that, and that's where I was five years ago. Yes, you CAN do this! You must exercise, but even more important, I believe, is controlling your eating. Structured programs like Weight Watchers are terrific. That's how I lost my first 99 pounds. Also, no matter what program you use, keep a written record of your eating. Food journaling is one of the most significant factors in my weight loss and maintenance, as is exercise.

Keep trying. You don't have to succeed the first time to be a success.

Sorry you are feeling so discouraged. As far as workouts, I think you need an all around strength and a variety of cardio but you could just mix kickboxing with walking or running. Do you know why you are gaining? Try to figure out what you are doing different with your diet that you can fix. I would also recommend Weight Watchers or another weight loss support system. Weekly meetings will give you that accountability besides the group support and info on ways to modify eating. Good luck.

Hi Goal160!

I like your name! You can reach your goal!

I was a chubby child, then got fat, then got obese, and I have been at a healthy weight for a few years now. What helped me was regular exercise, of course, but just as importantly I learned about nutrition. Here is a website I found to be very informative:

http://www.calorieking.com/

You can use it just to look up food values without registering. It also lists many restaraunts and fast food chains.

Any of Cathe's workouts will give you results. I liked the Body Blast series when I was new to Cathe....it helped me lose more fat and get stronger.

Buffettgirl, I know it wont come off overnight, but i figured since i am sooo overweight it would come off faster.Heck, look how much those people on The Biggest Loser lost!:)

Marie, i dont know why i am gaining,i think i need to get my thyroid and stuff like that checked.

RE: X-posted 229 pds, what to do to lose weight.Help ple...

I will very kindly tell you that I'm not sure if you're ready to do what you need to do to lose weight - what I'm reading from you is excuses about why what is suggested won't work. You need to take ownership for gaining weight, and I think you really know that you gained weight because you ate too much for too long and don't exercise enough.

That being said, you DON'T need to starve, and you don't need to exercise for hours to lose weight, and you DON'T have to do what they do on the Biggest Loser. Please re-consider a program like Weight Watchers which will help educate you on life-style changes that you must make. Might I ask why you stopped going to WW after 3 meetings?

Now, another thing - enough with the "I'm a sad case" stuff! You CAN do this, and you need to make that your mantra - repeat after me - "I CAN lose weight. I'm a smart, responsible person and I deserve this."

Now - Just Do It! :)

There are no secrets to weight loss. The long and short of it are you must eat less calories than you burn. There are ways to do it that are healthier and more likely to last a lifetime, and there are unhealthy ways that usually lead to being fat again. If you want to get a hold of this thing, it's going to shake you at your core! My tendency to overeat during stressful times of my life, I am a comfort food eater. This is a reality for me that will never change. But, when I see my self start to do that I tell myself I'm being self-destructive and try like hell to stop. First, you must stop defending your reasons for being overweight!
you said...
>>i really dont do much which is half of the problem i'm sure!

>>I have tried WW,paid the 99.00 and went 3 times!

>>I know it wont come off overnight, but i figured since i am sooo overweight it would come off faster.

>>i dont know why i am gaining,i think i need to get my thyroid and stuff like that checked.

>>I've tried that too,and it just did not go well for me,i'm a sad case!!!!

These are all ways of defending your habits! If you want to change you have to develope new habits, if you want to stay the same than you will keep defending old habits.
A good book I can recommend is "Outsmarting the Female Fat Cell" by Debra Waterhouse.
You can only expect to lose about 1 pound a week of fat. More than that and you are losing muscle which in the long run will make you burn less calories and make it even harder to lose weight. Make sure your goals are realistic. My goal by Christmas is 10 pounds. I hope you don't feel this is too harsh, I am not judging you about this. I want you to succeed!

HI There,
Im going to agree with Honeybunch on this one.
If you went to WW and it didn't work....its b/c you didn't make it work. There is no way, anyone can go to WW or any diet plan and not lose something.Maybe you weren't ready then, but you may be ready now.Who knows?

I think someone as to find some major motivation in order to lose 60-80 lbs and you do need to change your relationship with food. And other activites. You need to keep yourself occupied and get a plan in place. You obviously need guidence in which way to go.Reading labels and writing everything down is a great way to start. Also, figure out how many calories you will need to lose weight. There are many different web sites out there that will tell you this.
The only thing is...doing calorie counting is going to be more time consuming then going to WW or any other diet plan.I think WW would be great motivation b/c you know you have to get weighed in and who wants to be up? It wouldn't be me!
What about your friends? Any of them overweight? Maybe they can join you or you can get a workout buddy, that is always motivating!
You will get lost of great advice here and hopefully it will be something that can help you, keep us posted:)

Actually my mother was that weight at one point and it did begin to affect her health.

She began Weigth Watchers about 6 or 7 years ago and has lost over 125 pounds and kept it off. It is a very slow process but it really truly works. It is something that will commit to you as much as you commit to it.

She swears by it, so do I.:D

I just want to add something here.

Whatever you do, don't feel bad about yourself. I saw a show on TV the other night about a guy who weighed 1000 lbs., poor thing. One thing the show mentioned was that studies show that people with significant weight problems get less satisfaction from eating than normal weight people. Eating increases dopamine in the brain, and their brains don't produce as much dopamine, and they have tendency to keep eating to raise their dopamine levels and get the same level of satisfaction from food that other people get. Eating also affects seratonin, and people who control their depression through anti-depressants have less trouble maintaining a healthy weight. I have experienced this personally.

So, make sure you are not suffering from post-partum depression and that your mood is under control before you attempt a new diet and exercise program, so that you don't wind up disappointing yourself. And whatever you do, give yourself the benefit of the doubt.

I am another fan of WW as I lost 35 pounds and have been maintaining for 2.5 years. Losing weight is a committment, and not a quick fix. You have to break things down in little goals. My first goal was to go 1 month on WW and do everything they said to the letter. You know what happened the first week? I ended on on day 5 with a terrifically bad migraine. This was because I was detoxing. But I just kept going, and by the end of the month, I was seeing and average of 1.5 loss a week. That was enough for me to keep going through Christmas. I joined at Halloween and by Christmas had 17 pounds off, by the following May was at goal. I worked the plan, I journaled, and just picked myself up if I failed, and kept going. You have to believe inside you can do it. Believe it with all your heart you can do it, and you will.

Goal 160,
Check with your MD if you think you could have thyroid issues. Do you have symptoms other than the problem losing weight? I am hypothyroid and had a tough time convincing the MD to test me even though I had quite a few symptoms and strong family history. Even if you are and they start you on meds - that isn't the magic bullet.

Was there a reason you didn't go to WW? I am taking a break from going now but find the meetings and the group very motiviating and liked the accountability of the weekly weigh in. There are other programs (Jenny Craig etc) but much more expensive.

To reach your goal you need to continue to be motivated to eat right and exercise. WW and this forum can help you with the tools and info that you need to do it.

Hi Goal 160,
i usually just lurk on these boards and enjoy reading about the successes and knowledge others have gained from their experiences. i agree with lorihart, in that this forum is such a wealth of collective knowledge learned through trial and error. you are probably feeling a little overwhelmed right now, and a little impatient to get results, but you have to overcome that. it is not an overnight road trip, and anyone who tells you that is lying to you. you have to mentally prepare yourself for this adventure, and set small attainable goals for yourself. don't look at the big pictures of where you want to be just yet. set daily, weekly and monthly goals for now so that you can have accomplishments along the way, and rewared yourself for these accomplishments. i do not know anything about WW, but i have heard so many on this forum rave about it. also, don't use the word diet to describe your eating. diet is a depressing word that brings on images of deprivation. think of it as a lifestyle change. you eat to support your lifestyle. once you start hitting your small goals, you will gain momentum, and it will become more enjoyable. then you wont focus so much on the long range stuff that can seem so far away, but on the things you can have success with every day and every week. i would suggest you stay glued to this forum for support, and there are some incredible women and men on here that will give you advice and cheer you on. good luck with this adventure, and keep us posted.

Wow, talk about socking it to me....lol.....Well Well. First off thanks to everyone who took time to reply to me, i appreciate it dearly!;) Second, you're all right,i need to stop making excuses and just get my fat butt up and put in that dvd and exercise. When i tried Weight Watchers i was working,so i would go from my work straight to the meetings, and it just got to the point where the schedule didnt work out between me and my family/work life, so i just stopped going and wasted all 99.00.It's like everything i eat turns straight into pounds on the scale, almost like my metabolism is 0,and i'm only 24 yrs old!I'm one of those people that basically have to starve myself to see results, and that in itself makes it hard for me to keep going with any plan.Sad but true! I'm going to start working out really hard and see just how far i can push myself.Heck i might even lose that 30 pounds by December
;-) maybe maybe not...lol....I'll give it a try,and if i dont lose 30,and only lose 15 then thats fine with me, at least i tried. And on the flip side 15 pounds gone is better than 15 pounds still on me right! And for the record, i'm not looking for a sympathy as someone stated(cant see the posts) I'm just trying to get help, motivation, support from women who are taking control, thats all!Anyone who's never had a weight problem will never understand, and i'm talking about real weight issues, not that i need to lose 5 pounds type of stuff!I'm not depressed, i have a GREAT GREAT GREAT husband, and 2 wonderful kids, etc....the only thing in my life i need or want to change is my weight! Thanks for letting me vent, ask questions, ect cause its helped me tremendously. Andonce again thanks to all who responded.I hope to write another thread in December with some awesome results. Thanks a bunch,Goal 160:)
