I went from working out on my own 3 days a week plus teaching spinning on the bike 3 days, 6 day waterclass all depths (on deck)
and body blast weight class 4xs a week. I stop teaching this january. I've been working out at home one to two hours a day? I've been an instructor for 22 years going from 117 lbs. to now at 154 lbs. Been to my doctor everything is great! But I have gained 4 lbs. this month
I do use a polar heart rate alway, when working out bpms are right where I should be!! HELP!!;(

Sounds like you're suffering the effects of long-term overtraining. Plus, when you say "working out" you don't specify precisely what you are doing. Exercise frequency and duration are only two elements out of four that are important in an effective program; the mode (cardio {including various types of cardio}) and strength training are also important, as well as intensity.

Also, you haven't stated whether your measurements have gone up significantly as well. It could be that at 117 you were significantly underweight (and more specifically undermuscled) and perhaps the "weight" you have gained could be in large part healthy muscle mass.

Group X instructors are always at risk of overtraining by overteaching and loading too many classes onto their schedules. It may help to re-evaluate what you are doing, tweaking it to take down the frequency and/or duration but upkicking the intensity, AND making sure you are doing enough strength training AND getting enough rest.

betty---I hate to bring this up...........but do you suppose perimenopause has hit? How old are you? When I found that my thyroid and all were ok, I had to admit that it was that time of life. Nothing I am doing is helping with my weight. Nothing.

If you want real answers, I woulkd suggeest an endocrinologist. Maybe they can tell you what, if anything is messing with your metabolism.

At my age, I KNOW what it is..........;) :-(

it's okay to bring up age! I'm proud that I am 49 and will be 50 in August. My doctors just love me, very healthy just can't belive I can not lose an oz. My General Doctor work's out with me and just can't belive with all the workouts I do it just will not come off!

and yes i do think has something to do with age, but may be because i'm a meal skipper!! I just wish i had time to eat six times a day(power food) fruits and vegs., but i can't seem to eat that much! if anyone has a great plane out there i can stick to forever let me know?

thank you for the e-mail and careing SMILES betty!:D

I would look at diet...They say that 70% of weight loss is diet and only 30% excercise. I am not sure on that, but i know that when I watch what I eat very closely, I always lose weight.....and when I get enough sleep!

I have had similar problems several times, and it's been a combination of things. First, I had thyroid problems. Got that fixed with meds. Then I was undereating. Got that fixed with diet. Last, and most frustrating -- it turns out PCOS/insulin resistance was the culprit.

I used to take meds for diabetes but got it under control with diet and exercise and stopped taking the meds. Turns out I still need them, even though my sugars are normal. Now that I've gone back on Glucophage, I'm finally losing weight again (after two years).

Sadly, no one believed me, not even my doctors. They either treated me as though I was lying or assumed I was fooling myself (I keep such a close eye on my food intake that I even chart things like mustard).

Someone on this website suggested that the PCOS might be causing insulin resistance, which causes us to store a lot of what we eat as fat rather than burning it for fuel. Personally, I can't understand how this works, can't get my mind around it as it seems impossible. Also, my ob-gyn had told me not to worry about the PCOS, that it was no big deal. Wrong! My endo, who told me there was nothing I could do about the weight, agreed to give the Glucophage a try, at my suggestion, and it's working. Whoopee! I'm crossing my fingers hoping to ride this wave for a while before something else breaks.

Don't know if any of this pertains to your situation, but here it is for what it's worth. Best wishes. Be sure to let us know if you find out what's wrong. It might help one of us down the road.

This post has been interesting reading! I swear, when you hit a certain age or worked out a long time, your body just does a 'posessed' thing on you and hits the weight-loss breaks! My body is acting like something I've never seen! Same as you.....;(
