LONDON (AFP) - A British woman with terminal cancer who became one the country's leading fundraisers said in an interview to be broadcast Monday that this summer could be the last she spends with her family.
"The reality is that this will probably be the last summer that I get to spend with my family because of the extent of the disease that I have," Jane Tomlinson told GMTV.
"That's quite difficult to live with and it's quite difficult to stay positive, but you have to put that at the back of your mind so that you can enjoy the summer and that's what I'm going to be trying to do."
Tomlinson, a 43-year-old paediatric radiologist, was told in 2000 that she had incurable breast cancer and was given only six months to live.
But despite the disease spreading, she has raised more than 1.5 million pounds (2.2 million euros, 2.9 million dollars) through a series of gruelling physical challenges that would test the endurance of any healthy athlete.
She was the first person with uncurable cancer to complete the Ironman triathlon (four-kilometre swim, 180-km bike ride and full marathon) and has run a number of marathons, including one while undergoing chemotherapy treatment.
In 2004, she rode the 4,000 kilometres (2,485 miles) by bike from Rome to her home city of Leeds, northern England.
And last year, she completed a nine-week, 6,780-kilometre ride across the United States from San Francisco to New York.
In an interview with AFP in November last year, the mother-of-four said she was giving up her sporting exploits because of the spread of the disease.
But she has organised a 10-kilometre run through Leeds on June 24. So far 8,000 people have signed up to take part.
In her GMTV interview, she was frank about her deteriorating health.
"I've had seven years to contemplate the fact that I'm not going to be around for my family but it doesn't make the end point any clearer, I don't think, and it doesn't make it any easier when you meet it," she said.
In recognition of her fund-raising efforts, Queen Elizabeth II made Tomlinson a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in her annual birthday honours list on Saturday. She was made an MBE in 2003.
