worse 5k ever!

I participated in a cross country 5k today for charity. people really didnt know where they where doing and it was cold and windy and muddy. I had a really hard time running it. I actually walked some of it and had my worst time ever over 31 minutes. I couldnt believe I did that bad. I felt like a really poor excuse of a runner today has anyone had this happen to them at a race? In the end though I thought it was for a good cause and that was what mattered the most!

Laura...don't feel bad at all!!! Congrats on running for a good cause!! I have run some cold, muddy trails and honestly unless you are the bionic woman how in the world do you think you could go fast?? You just never know about how weather conditions will affect any run...Please don't beat yourself up about this and feel great about the accomplishment and not sitting on the couch!!...BTW 31 min is NOT a bad time for a 5K...:)

Sure, you have less-than-stellar race performances same as you have less-than-stellar training runs sometimes, and weather certainly can play a part. Just remember, in addition to supporting a good cause, you still beat all the people who are sitting on their couches and would never have the gumption to enter a race in the first place. Shake it off and happy trails to ya! :)

Agreed! I'm happy when I break 35 minutes for a 5k - yes, I'm that slow. Everyone has bad races - don't let this one get to you. You'll do better next time. :)

My first race of the season is always a "starting" point. My goal is to get faster with every race of the season. Look at it this way, next 5K will be much faster!!!

At least you got some exercise and contributed to a worthy cause. Also it's a great experience for future races that may have similar race conditions.

I would be so lucky to break 31 minutes on a 5K.

You'll get 'em next time!!!

Hi Laura

Don't understimate how much a windy day can mess up your time.

Running into wind is hard, you have to expend more energy to fight that force pushing you back. I would venture to guess that most people who ran in your race had slower times than they normally would as well.

Congratulations on getting through it.. Pat yourself on the back that you got through a yucky run and did it! :)

Ha Ha. That brings back memories of my second 10K. I had an audience of family (which I see once a year if even that) and it downpoured rain the entire race. What an experience!

My first 10K I did while 8 weeks pg with my 2nd baby. Oh!!! Was I slowwwwwww.... there was only one person was behind me, talk about an ego burst. ;)

Sounds so 'not fun.'
But look at it this way: every experience in life has some value, even if it's as a 'war story' or something to laugh at later.
After this experience, you future 5k's should look pretty good!

thanks everyone. Most peoples times where way off. It was a cross country 5k,very muddy and rough ground. I ran a 5k a couple weeks earlier and finished 25:59 so I know I can do better. I guess you get stuck around a certain number sometimes and if you dont finish somewhere close you get disappointed. I also end up with an allergic reaction running out in all that weeded area. My eyes felt like I had cut an onion or someone poked you in the eye all day yesterday and this morning my DH laughed at the way I looked ,he said It looked like someone punched me. I have severe allergies to trees, grass etc.... and I think with the wind blowing so bad it really affected me more than I thought. anyway, its done and I will do another 5k in may. thanks for all your support.

That's so funny about DH. My husband watched me race ONCE. I tried to look really tough and strong toward the finish line, where he was (so I could impress my husband of 17 years). Later I asked, "Did I look good?". He said, "No, you looked really burnt out and tired.". Oh well, so much for that theory!

Congratulations on your 5k time!

One of the last 5ks I ever ran was the one where I was beaten by a race-walker. On a mostly uphill course.

God, how humiliating. My race time was 43 minutes.

I think I only ever ran for the free power bars and bananas afterwards.

31 minutes on a cross country course is not bad at all. A XC course is not the same as running on the roads. The grass and trails slow you down at least a minute per mile. Mud and wind slow you down even more. You finished and it was for a good cause...that is what's important.
