Working out with a cold.

I know this topic has been up for discussion a lot. I have a sore throat, stuffy/runny nose (thanks to my 2 little guys) for 2 days and I'm going nuts because I can't do cardio. What do you do when you have a cold? I did PUB yesterday and S&H legs today.

I am having the same problem Linda. It started on Monday night. Good for you doing the workouts that you did. I am just taking a few days off until I feel better. I can't think of working out with my head this stuffy!

I can so relate. :-( :-( I'm still getting over a cold that is well into it's third week. It's just about gone but I have a lingering cough that has made w/o's all but impossible. I've really just gotten back into cardio this week.

I think all you can do is tough it out. Drink lots, and lots of fluids, take vitamins, rest, use meds if you need to...and did I say fluids and rest!?

While in the thick of it I did nothing, then as I started to feel better I tried light cardio--Leslie Sansone--and took some walks outside. Too much cardio just stirred up the cough and it wasn't worth it.

I hope you feel better soon;)

Thank goodness it's not just my family (not that I wish this cold on anyone else!!)...

I've been doing the same...Rest, water and light walks the past couple of days...

Did I hear someone say 3 weeks?? Hopefully we have different variations!

Caren - I know rest is the best thing, it's so hard though! W/o's are part of my day as eating is when I can't w/o I go thru withdraw.

Michele - sounds like you had a bad cold! Seems like your doing all the right things. I don't want to resume cardio too soon for the same reason - a relapse.

Oh well I guess it is the season. I think I'm getting the flu shot this year.

Thanks for your responses & feel better soon.:)

MJ in MN - sorry to hear about your cold too! I remember last winter It seemed like I had a cold all winter long, I'm not looking forward to that this year!

Linda --

It depends. I've been so sick for the last 3 weeks that I haven't been able to do anything (almost).

Normally, I will just push through and force myself to workout when I have a cold. That normally works for ME and ends up making me feel better quicker than if I laid on the couch all day.

If I'm too stuffy or runny to do cardio -- then I will do some low-intensity cardio (like walking) and some weights...otherwise, the snot just flows out of my head while bouncing around -- which is just gross.

However, if I have a fever OR if I feel completely exhausted (like the last 3 weeks)...I will do very little working out. Sometimes you just gotta take a break.

But if you CAN do it...I don't think there's any harm. And, actually, I believe it makes me feel better quicker. Something about sweating it out, I guess.

I just had a cold earlier in the week. I did NOTHING. I adjusted my eating so that I wouldn't gain any weight and I rested until I felt better. There was a time when I would try my hardest to push through it and exercise anyway but I have realized that it's not worth it (for me, anyway). I rested and got over the cold lickety split and was up and running again in no time! :+

I am a huge advocate of listening to your body. I had a cold for the past three days and since my body was telling me not to work out, I didn't. I feel much better today so I did MM. I think if I had pushed myself to work out when my body was asking for rest, I would still feel run down. Sometimes when I have a cold, I feel like working out anyway, so I listen to my body and work out (but not too hard).

I think it's unhealthy and counter-productive to push yourself unnecessarily.

Shonie - Snot flying around my living room doesn't sound appealing to me (although my kids would think it's cool):) I agree about taking a break with a fever/feeling tired. I think I'll try some light cardio.

Wendy & Susan - Resting while having a cold is the intelligent thing to do. It's just so hard to do.x(

I wonder what I would be addicted to if I didn't exercise, I know it would be something.

Hope we all feel better soon.:)
