Working out after months with Ralph

I think I am starting to get over the sickness part (made dinner last night!) and am hoping to start working out again. I am 3 mo. and wondering if I can start out at a beginner level with cardio and weights and work up a bit. Or do I have to stay at a beginner level for the pregnancy. I'm afraid my motivation will leave if I can't make any improvements.

So glad to hear!

So glad to hear that you are feeling much better, Andrea. You are probably finished with the sick part now, and you can sit back and relax and enjoy the next 5 or 6 months. It is so wonderful when the baby starts kicking around. Good luck to you!

RALPH??? too funny

Love your subject line. I thought "who the heck is Ralph". Good one.

I highly recommend that you talk to your doctor about level of working out.

Hi Andrea!!

I worked out through my first two pregnancies once the morning sickness wore off. FIRST and FOREMOST, ******congratulations!!!! YIPPEE!!!!**** about feeling better. Wow, what a relief. As far as working out goes, start off with some beginner stuff and ease back into it. Up until about 7 1/2 months you will probably be able to see small but regular gains. After that, just doing the same workout with your increasing bulk will be enough of a fitness gain! You'll be providing your own increased resistance!

That is how it worked for me anyway. After 3 months off I really had to start slow, but during that high-energy middle trimester you will see progress. What's really great, though, is the first time you work out AFTER giving birth. . . it feels like the fitness gain of the century because all that extra weight is gone and it feels like you could fly!

Don't worry too much about fitness gains while you're pregnant, though, just be happy with small victories and know that you'll have a much better recovery and bounce-back after keeping active. During my third pregnancy I had some complications and couldn't work out and believe me, those pregnancy workouts make a HUGE difference even if you don't feel like you're progressing.

Thank you and 1 more Q

My doc did say not to lift anything over my head. I didn't think to ask questions at the time cause I had just seen my baby and was very excited. One because it is still so early, and two because I lost my last one so was more nervous with this one. Did any of you do military presses while preg? Even with just 3 lbers? I hate to call him for such a trivial question. Otherwise, I'll just stick with flies nad such.

Lifting overhead while pregnant

Hi Andrea,

I would definitely like to know the reason why your doc told you not to lift anything over your head. Will you please ask the next time that you see him?

Since you are working your shoulder muscles with overhead presses, you could substitute frontal (anterior) and lateral raises for your overhead presses.

Please be sure to post after your next visit to the doctor. I want to hear his answer.

lifting overhead

That does sound like a rather odd recommendation from your doc-does that mean you can't put anything into or get anything out of overhead cupboards?!? I'd be interested in his reply too as I'm hoping in the next 6-8 mos to be in the "family way" too

Glad to hear it Andrea:O)

I have admired the fact that you check in each week...despite the morning sickness and inability to workout. I bet you are going to do just fine in the motivation and commitment catagory

I'll let you know

I go back Sept. 11 so you'll have a long wait, but I'll ask and do a new post!
