Will someone explain cell phone etiquette to me?

People walk in front of your car--at least in my town--talking and expect you to be responsible for their crossing the street.
I've always considered cell phone talkers crossing the street as fair game...at least in my imagination.

When people are talking with an earpiece in the store and i can't see the earpiece, I may respond to their question, only to have them very rudely talk to me like I am 4 years old. " I AM ON THE PHONE"!!!!!

Don't get me started on those Bluetooth ear piece things!
And people don't talk on them in a 'private' voice, but in a 'public' voice, so you often can't tell if they are talking to someone on a phone, to you...or to themselves! (Same thing with many cell phone conversations: people using their 'public' voice for a 'private' conversation).

The ultimate for me (except for people who let their cell phones ring out in house of worship during services, weddings, funerals, etc.) are . . .

Those who continue talking on their cell phones going into the ladies' room . . .

Then going into the stall . . .

And then dropping their drawers and sitting down . . .

And doing God knows what (well, actually we often can hear it so we know it too) . . .

And so on and so on and so on.

People.

Don't talk on the cell phone while you're doing your business in the lavatory. Just . . . don't.

Makes me want to go into every other stall and FLUSH!!!!!

I totally agree!

You are too funny Aquajock!! :)

What a good idea...flush all the toilets!!

OMG, that grosses me out as well. Especially since it interferes with MY privacy as well! Students do that quite a lot. I just hope their cell phones don't have that good sound clarity. I certainly don't want to be talking to someone on the phone and hear them doing their 'business'.

And I'm sure that whatever they are talking about is of such Earth-shattering import that they absolutely have to talk about at that precise moment.

I can't provide my opinion on cell phone users yet because I can't get past the part where the person goes to the atm machine AFTER their order was rung up. What's the deal with that? How hard would it have been to stop at the atm before shopping? Or, here's a brilliant idea...couldn't she have just paid using her atm card? I am still always amazed at just how many ignorant people are in the world.

Now I'm off to make sure my cell phone is turned off :)

My mom is the worst. Not only does she talk on the cell phone in public, but she uses speaker phone. People have said things to her and she actually gets mad. Someone commented on the conversation and my mom said back "excuse me this is a private conversation" and the lady said, "um, no it isn't!" hahaha

At home, my DH will talk on his cell phone while going to the bathroom and thinks the people on the other end can't hear him pee or flush. I got news for him - THEY CAN!!!

I RARELY carry my cell phone b/c frankly I just don't think I'm that important (or maybe it's that other people aren't that important to me-just kidding-maybe).

Thank you Laura -- you said everything I was thinking in my mind! It seems the grocery store is one of the worst places regarding cell phones! I hate having someone come up beside me while I'm looking for something and start talking -- I think they're talking to me, so I turn around and realize they're on the cell phone - or they're just walking down the aisle with an ear piece and they look like they are talking to themselves!!. It is so annoying! Oh -- I could go on and on!

1 second.

I was at the post office one day, and the first woman in line was yacking away on her phone, continued yacking away when she went up to the counter and didn't even acknowledge the existence of the clerk. She did her entire transaction while still on the phone. When I got to the counter, I mentioned it to the clerk and he was clearly annoyed as well.

Ied:

My post office has like a bajillion signs that say no cell phone allows and I thought it was a fed thing? I'll have to actually read it next time I'm in there, but I don't pay attention because I leave my cell in the car when I go into a business. Actually, my work doesn't allow me to bring my cell phone in so I'm kind of used to it not being an appendage :)

Oh, that would have made me just lose it! I think the right "etiquette" would be for the cell phone users to lose their place in line until they're through with their oh-so-important phone call! That is so annoying!!!

What I want to know - a little off-topic - is when are they going to ban talking on hand-held cell phones while driving??? I can't tell you how many times I have almost been hit by someone because they're dialing or talking on their cell phone and can't turn their steering wheel with one hand! Sheesh!

Tricia - I can tell you that California has banned hand held cell phones and it makes no difference. It's not holding the phone that causes the problem - it's getting involved in the conversation and not paying attention to what is going on that is the issue. There are still people driving 40 MPH on the freeway yakking away. There are still people who almost hit everything in site while on the phone. We also banned texting, which to me is more important. Studies have shown that texting while driving is as bad as driving drunk. We lost a couple of cyclists on a road with high visibility and wide bike lanes from someone doing this. They drifted into the bike lane while coming up to a traffic stop.

Same here in NJ. No one pays any attention to it, including the police. I cannot tell you how many times I've been passed by a patrol car & seen the driver talking on a cell (no, not an official PD cell b/c there is no such thing, they use radios).

I must say, the only place I almost intentionally use it is in doc's offices. I figure when they start seeing me at least w/in 30 minutes of my scheduled appt, I'll stop using my cell phone in their waiting waiting waiting room. ;)

So this thread came to mind today when my husband and I took our DDs to see the movie "Up". It is nearing the end of the movie when a cell phone rings several times and a lady answers and continues her conversation with no end in sight!! By this time everyone is ssssshhhssshhing her so I get up and walk over and tell her to please stop talking on her cell during the movie. She immediately hung up the phone and looked a little freaked out that I said something. After the movie I went to use the restroom and the lady was in there with her 2 young sons. She called me "stupido" twice and was getting more and more upset that I was ignoring her then she finally started yelling at me saying she could not believe I did not work there and I was telling her what to do!! I walked out to where my husband and DDs were waiting for me outside the restroom and this lady follows me out with her sons continuing to scream causing one of the employees to see what was going on and another lady from our same movie backed me up by agreeing with what happened in the theater. We all just walked away because by this time the lady called me "f*** b***" and I just wanted to get all the children away from this psycho. I just kept thinking about what a great example she was setting for her own young sons - how sad :(

ITA! I am a receptionist at a Drs. office. We have a sign posted that reads "As a courtesy to you and in the interest of accuracy we will wait until your cell phone conversation is complete to help you". Of course, many still do not get the hint!! BTW patients are usually seen within 10- 30 minutes of their appt. times! ;) (although, I realize this is very unusual for a Drs office! But, that is another thread altogether! :D)
