Why?

Ok, why is it that you can workout for months, be in great shape, and it took you say, years to get in such great shape. Then, you get sick and too buisy for just two weeks and all of the sudden you feel like you're starting all over again? I took two weeks off, and today I tried to do IMAX 2 and just about died. I got through the first 5 intervals and just couldn't physically continue. And now I'm totally wiped out! Granted I was sick last week, and I may still have a little bit of the cold, but this has happened before and it's soo frustrating! Granted in about 2 weeks I'll be right back where I was, but why does the body seem to want to lose the muscle and endurance that you once had soo fast?
Sorry I'm just venting my frustration, but if anyone has any input as to why this is that would be great! Or if you just want to chime in about how this happens to you as well that is great too!

I don't really know why but I know exactly how you feel. I have been working out for about four years and in November I got a bad respiratory infection with bronchitis and I couldn't really work out because I couldn't breathe and I had no energy. I quit doing Taebo a long time ago because it got too easy for me, and I tried to do that and I could't even finish 1/2 the tape! So I didn't get any decent workout in for about 3 weeks.

Your right though, after a couple of weeks I was right back to where I was before I got sick. Hang in there.

Hi Kathy,

I have no insight into why this happens, but I can truly empathize with you. This is why I never take a full week off; I take active rests if I need to give my body a break, and just do lower intensity stuff for a bit. Fortunately I haven't been forced to take a long break due to illness or travelling. My dread of being where you are today is what motivates me to find some way to workout even when away from home.

I hope you get back into high gear really soon! And that's pretty brave of you to tackle IMAX2, right off the top! Good work on doing the first 5 intervals!!

Im in the "Why" club as well, but have no answer either.

Infact Ive noticed that even when, for what ever reason, I decrease my workout days from say 6 - 3 for a couple of weeks, there is a HUGE difference in my training results.........I loose alot of cardio capacity especially!

For me, I oviously have to keep my body moving constantly to keep on top of my fitness and strength (sigh!)

I agree and sympathise It is VERY frustrating when you are sick or unable to train and you feel like yourve gone back to square one.

It's a total PIA. I haven't had as much of a problem w/the working out--I don't think I've ever taken more than a week off, & after the week I've actually felt stronger--but it's the diet that kills me. If I splurge for two days I can literally gain like 5 lbs. Atkins is great when you want to lose weight fast, but unfortunately you can gain it back really fast too.

I can't remember exact numbers, but I believe it takes something like 6 weeks to lose muscle you work a year to gain. It just isn't fair, is it?

Growing up I danced (ballet, tap, jazz). My wonderfully wise teacher always told us that for every week you didn't dance (or do anything else physical), it took 2 weeks just to get back to where you were when you quit. I'm not sure how she knew that, but personal experience puts her timing just about right.

I think that's why non-exercisers have such a hard time making it a habit. They have a hard time being patient enough to get to the point where it feels good.

Good luck with your recovery. At least you started, and with a toughie too!

Oh, I'm soo glad that i'm not the only one that this happens to! I really don't know what got the bug up my butt to even attempt IMAX 2, but it was there, so I went with it.
Thank you all for giving me a shoulder to cry on! Have a wonderful day!

Kathy,
I was in a similar situation about a month ago. Was off for two weeks for an illness. My first w/o was KPC and I only made it through half!! You are right in 2 weeks you'll be back to where you were. As for why- I think it's your body still using energy to heal itself and we should listen to that. I just gradually eased back into exercising after my unwanted break and rested lots and of course drink plenty of H2O!! just keep on truckin!!

:D
